Frequently asked questions
What is split toning?
Split toning tints the shadows of a photo with one color and the highlights with another. A classic pairing is cool blue shadows with warm gold highlights, which adds depth and a cinematic mood. The technique comes from darkroom toning and is now a common color grading step for portraits, weddings, and landscapes, in both color and black and white images.
How do I use the Split Toning Tool?
Drop Image or Click to Upload and choose a photo. Under Shadow Tint, pick a color with the color swatch and set its strength with the slider beside it. Do the same under Highlight Tint. Both strengths run from 0 to 100 and start at 30. Click Apply Toning and the toned image downloads as toned-image.png.
How does the tool decide what counts as a shadow or a highlight?
It calculates the brightness of every pixel. Pixels darker than the midpoint receive the shadow tint and brighter pixels receive the highlight tint. The tint is strongest in the deepest shadows and brightest highlights and fades to nothing at the midtones, so skin and other mid-tone areas stay close to their original color while the ends of the tonal range carry the grade.
What are the default colors, and which combinations work best?
The defaults are a blue shadow tint and a gold highlight tint, a popular teal and orange style look. Other reliable pairings include warm sepia highlights over neutral shadows for a vintage feel, or green shadows with cream highlights for film emulation. Keep strengths low, around 10 to 30, for subtle portrait work, and push higher for stylized images.
Which file formats does the Split Toning Tool support?
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, or any other image your browser can display. The tool processes one photo at a time at full resolution and always saves a PNG, which is lossless, so the toning is preserved without extra compression. Convert the PNG to JPG afterward if you need a smaller file for the web or social media.
Is the Split Toning Tool free and private?
It is free with no watermark and no software to install. Toning happens inside your browser on your own device, so your photos are never uploaded to a server. On first use you answer that you are a photographer and sign in to or create a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool on the site.
