Frequently asked questions
What does the GIF to ICO Converter do?
It converts a GIF into an ICO file, the icon format used by Windows and by website favicons. The tool draws the GIF onto a 32 by 32 pixel canvas and writes it into an ICO container that stores the image as PNG data, a variant supported since Windows Vista and by all current browsers.
How do I make an ICO file from a GIF?
Click the upload area or drag a GIF onto it. The file appears with the status Ready and the Convert to ICO button becomes active. Click it; the status shows Converting, then Done, and an .ico file with the same base name downloads. Rename it favicon.ico if you plan to use it as a website icon.
What size is the icon, and is the aspect ratio kept?
Every icon is 32 by 32 pixels, a standard size for favicons and small desktop icons. The GIF is stretched to fill that square, so a wide or tall image will look squeezed. For a clean result, crop your GIF to a square before converting, and use a simple, bold design, because fine detail disappears at this size.
Can I convert an animated GIF to ICO?
Yes, the tool accepts animated GIFs, but ICO files hold still images, so the icon uses the first frame of the animation. Make sure the first frame is the one you want people to see. If it is not, export your preferred frame from an editor as its own GIF and convert that instead.
How can photographers use a custom icon?
A favicon with your logo or monogram makes your portfolio or client gallery easy to spot among open browser tabs and bookmarks. Create a square version of your logo, export it as a GIF, and convert it here. Transparent areas of the GIF stay transparent in the icon, so it sits cleanly on light and dark browser themes.
Is the GIF to ICO converter free?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Your GIF is processed in your browser on your own device and is never uploaded. To use the tools, you answer once that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and every tool is unlocked after that.
