Frequently asked questions
What does the GIF to BMP Converter do?
It reads a GIF in your browser and saves its first frame as a BMP, the uncompressed bitmap format native to Windows. The output is a standard 24-bit, bottom-up file that virtually every image reader accepts, from old Windows utilities to embedded systems and some print and signage software that will not open GIFs.
How do I convert a GIF to BMP?
Click the upload area and pick a GIF from your device. The file name appears with the status Ready, and the Convert to BMP button turns on. Click it; the status changes to Converting and then Done, and your browser downloads a .bmp file with the same name as the original. To convert another GIF, simply select a new file.
What happens to animated GIFs?
A BMP holds a single still image, so the converter uses the first frame of the animation. If you need a different frame, open the GIF in an editor, export that frame on its own as a GIF or PNG, and then convert it. Every pixel of the frame is kept at the original width and height, with no resizing.
Does BMP support transparency?
Not in the 24-bit form this tool writes. Any transparent pixels in the GIF are placed over a white background, so a logo with a transparent backdrop becomes a logo on white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or TIFF instead, since both formats can store an alpha channel alongside the color information.
Will my BMP be larger than the GIF?
Usually much larger. GIF compresses its 256-color palette, while BMP stores every pixel uncompressed at 24 bits. A 200 KB GIF can easily become several megabytes. Quality does not drop, because every color is copied exactly, but keep BMP for the software that requires it rather than for web pages, email or client delivery.
Is the GIF to BMP converter free and private?
Yes. There is no charge, no watermark and no software to install. The conversion runs in your browser, so the GIF is processed on your own device and never uploaded. To get started, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account once, and every tool is unlocked from then on.
