BMP to AVIF Converter

The BMP to AVIF Converter turns large, uncompressed BMP images into compact AVIF files for websites, portfolios and sharing. Photographers select one or more BMPs, set the quality, and each file is encoded as a genuine AVIF in the browser, using its own encoder or a WebAssembly encoder where the browser has none, then downloaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert BMP files to AVIF?

BMP stores every pixel without compression, so even a modest photo takes up many megabytes. AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec, and it compresses photos far more efficiently, usually producing smaller files than JPEG at similar visual quality. That makes it a strong choice for website galleries, portfolios and blog images, where smaller files mean faster pages. All current major browsers can display AVIF.

How do I convert BMP to AVIF?

Click the file area and select one or more .bmp files; other file types are left out. Your files appear in a list marked Pending, and a Quality slider appears, set to 80 percent. Adjust it if you like, then click Convert to AVIF. Each file changes to Processing and then Done, and its AVIF downloads automatically with the same name and an .avif extension. Your browser may ask once for permission to download several files.

What quality setting should I use?

AVIF compression is lossy, and the Quality slider trades detail against file size. The default of 80 percent suits most web images, with little visible difference from the original. For thumbnails or background images, 60 to 70 percent gives much smaller files. For images with fine texture or smooth gradients that will be viewed large, such as skies or skin, try 90 percent or higher. Because the conversion happens on your device, test two settings on one image and compare.

Is the output a real AVIF file?

Yes. Many browsers cannot write AVIF themselves, so the tool uses an AVIF encoder compiled to WebAssembly that runs in the page whenever the browser lacks its own. Each result is checked before saving, and if encoding fails, the file's status shows an error rather than saving a PNG with an .avif name. AVIF encoding is demanding, so large BMPs can take several seconds each, especially on older computers and phones.

Where can I use AVIF files, and what are the limits?

AVIF displays in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, and many website platforms accept it. Some older image viewers, editors and email clients cannot open it yet, so keep your BMP originals, or a JPEG copy, for those. If a BMP cannot be read, its status says so. The converted files keep the pixel dimensions of the originals; to make them smaller still for the web, resize the BMP before converting.

Is the BMP to AVIF Converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. Your images are encoded by your browser on your own device and never leave it. The first time, you answer that you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and that unlocks this tool and every other one on the site.
