Frequently asked questions

Why convert HEIC photos to AVIF?

HEIC is Apple's default photo format, but support outside Apple devices is patchy, especially in web browsers. AVIF offers similar or better compression and is supported by current versions of the major browsers, which makes it a strong choice for portfolio sites and blogs where page speed matters. Converting gives you small files that display on the web.

How do I convert HEIC to AVIF?

Click the upload area or drag HEIC or HEIF files onto it. The AVIF Quality slider and your file list appear, with each file and its size marked Ready. Set the quality, then click Convert to AVIF. Files are processed in turn, each changing to Processing and then Done as it downloads. Use Clear List to start again.

What AVIF quality setting should I use?

The slider runs from 1 to 100 percent, labeled from Smaller File to Better Quality, and starts at 85. For portfolio and gallery images, 75 to 85 keeps detail with much smaller files than JPG. Go higher for images clients may zoom into, and lower for thumbnails. Fine textures and skies reveal compression first, so check those areas.

What if my browser cannot create AVIF files?

You still get a real AVIF file. The tool uses your browser's own AVIF encoder where one exists, and an encoder built into the page where it does not, so every download is a genuine .avif file rather than a renamed PNG. If a file cannot be decoded or encoded, its status changes to Error and nothing is saved for it, while the other files in the list carry on converting.

Does converting HEIC to AVIF lose quality?

AVIF is used here as a lossy format, so some detail is traded for smaller files, though at high quality settings the difference is hard to see. Each HEIC file is first decoded at full quality, then encoded once to AVIF, so there is only one new compression step. Keep your original HEIC files as masters.

Is the HEIC to AVIF converter free?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Your photos are converted in your browser on your own device and never uploaded. The first time you use one of the tools, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; after that, every tool is unlocked.
