Frequently asked questions

What is AVIF, and why convert JPGs to it?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. At similar visual quality, AVIF files are often much smaller than JPGs, and the format supports wide color and HDR. Current versions of the major browsers display AVIF, so converting portfolio and blog images can noticeably speed up page loads for your visitors.

How do I convert JPG to AVIF?

Click the drop area or drag JPG files onto it. The AVIF Quality slider and your file list appear, showing each file's original size. Set the quality, then click Convert to AVIF. Each file switches to Processing and then Converted as its .avif file downloads. Add more files at any time, or click Clear All to start over.

What AVIF quality setting should I choose?

The slider runs from 1 to 100 percent, from Smaller File (Lower Quality) to Larger File (Higher Quality), with a default of 80. Around 70 to 80 suits most web galleries. Use higher values for hero images and portfolio highlights, and lower values for thumbnails. Check skin tones, skies and fine textures at full size after converting.

Does the converter work in every browser?

Yes. Some browsers can write AVIF themselves and the tool uses that when it is available. Where a browser cannot, the tool loads its own AVIF encoder the first time you convert, so the first file may take a few extra seconds while it loads. Either way the result is a real AVIF file. If a file shows AVIF Encoding Failed or Invalid Image, check that it opens normally as a JPG and try again.

Should I deliver photos to clients in AVIF?

For client downloads and print orders, JPG is still the safer choice, since some apps, print labs and older devices cannot open AVIF. AVIF shines on your own website, where you control how images are served. A common approach is to keep full-quality JPGs for delivery and use AVIF versions for portfolio pages and blog posts.

Is the JPG to AVIF converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Your photos are converted in your browser on your own device and never leave it. Before first use you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; that single step unlocks this and every other tool.
