Frequently asked questions
What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL, with the extension .jxl, is a modern image format designed as a successor to JPEG. It offers efficient compression, support for high bit depths, wide color and HDR, and both lossy and lossless modes. Support is growing in operating systems, browsers and photo software, which makes it interesting for photographers planning a long-term archive.
How do I convert JPG to JXL?
Click the area at the top and select one or more JPG images. The files appear in a list marked Pending and the Convert to JXL button is shown. Click it and each file changes to Converting, then Ready to Download, as a .jxl file with the original name is saved. The first conversion can take a few seconds while the encoder loads. If your browser asks to allow multiple downloads, accept.
Does converting JPG to JXL improve quality?
No conversion can restore detail that JPEG compression already removed. The tool decodes your JPG and encodes the pixels as a new lossy JPEG XL file at quality 90, so the result is visually very close to the source but not a bit-exact copy. The advantage of JPEG XL is efficiency. Keep your original JPGs until you have confirmed the .jxl files open in the apps and devices you use.
Can every app open JXL files?
Not yet. Support is uneven: some operating systems, browsers and image editors open JPEG XL, while many others, including some web platforms and print services, do not. Check your target software before converting a large set, and keep JPG versions of anything you deliver to clients or post online, so nobody receives a file they cannot open.
Should photographers switch to JPEG XL?
For archives and personal storage, JPEG XL is worth watching because of its efficiency and high-quality modes. For delivering images today, JPG remains the safest format, because every client, lab and platform can open it. A practical approach is to experiment with JXL on copies while keeping JPG as your delivery standard.
Is the JPG to JXL converter free?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Conversion runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your own device. The first time you use a tool, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; after that, every tool is unlocked.
