Frequently asked questions
What is a JXL file?
JXL is the file extension for JPEG XL, an image format designed to compress photographs efficiently while keeping high visual quality. The format supports wide color, high bit depth, transparency and both lossy and lossless compression, which makes it appealing to photographers who want smaller files for web delivery and archiving. This converter writes 8-bit color with an alpha channel. Support in apps and browsers is still growing, so check that your destination can open it.
How do I convert PNG to JXL with this tool?
Click the upload area and select one or more PNG files. A JPEG XL Quality slider appears with your file list. Leave it at the default of 100 or choose any value from 1 to 100, then click Convert to JXL. Each file is processed in turn, its status changes to Done, and a .jxl file downloads with the original file name. Clear empties the list so you can start again.
What does the JPEG XL quality setting do?
The quality slider controls how much detail the JPEG XL encoder keeps. At the default of 100 the result is near-lossless, with pixel values typically within one step of the original, which makes it a sensible choice for archiving. Lower values let the encoder discard fine detail the eye is less likely to notice, so files get smaller. Values around 80 to 90 suit web previews. The encoder's speed setting, sometimes called effort, is fixed and cannot be changed here.
Can I convert many PNG files to JXL at once?
Yes. Select as many PNGs as you need in a single pick, and the tool converts them one after another, updating the status next to each file name as it goes. Every file uses the same quality setting, and each result downloads as its own .jxl file. Your browser may ask once for permission to download multiple files; allow it so the whole batch arrives in your downloads folder.
Should I use JXL for client deliveries?
For most clients, not yet. Many phones, browsers and photo viewers still cannot open JPEG XL, so a client could receive files they are unable to view. JPG remains the safe choice for galleries and downloads. JXL is better suited to your own archive, to testing on a website you control, or to collaborators who have confirmed their software supports the format.
Is the PNG to JXL Converter free to use?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and requires no installation. Conversion happens in your browser, so your PNG files stay on your own device the whole time. Access needs one quick step: you confirm that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks this converter and all the other tools.
