What does the Leica RWL to PNG converter do?
It takes RWL files, the raw format used by several Leica compact and bridge cameras, finds the largest JPEG preview the camera stored in each one, and saves it as a PNG with the correct orientation. PNG is lossless and opens in almost any viewer, editor or browser, so it is practical when you need to look at, send or archive a frame without a raw-capable application.
How do I convert RWL files to PNG step by step?
Click the Click or Drag Leica RWL Files area, or drag your files onto it. Each file appears in a list marked Ready. Click Convert to PNG and the tool works through the list one file at a time, switching each status to Extracting and then Done. Every converted image downloads automatically with its original name and a .png extension, so the results are easy to match to your originals.
Is this a full RAW development of my Leica files?
No. The tool does not develop the sensor data and has no controls such as white balance, exposure or highlight recovery. It uses the preview the camera rendered and stored in the file, with your in-camera settings applied, at 8 bits per channel and at the preview's resolution. If a file holds no preview your browser can decode, no PNG is produced. For color-critical work, develop the raw in your editor.
Why choose PNG instead of JPG for converted RAW files?
PNG is lossless, so no new compression artifacts are added when the preview is saved, which keeps it at its best for proofing or further editing. The trade-off is file size: a PNG is usually several times larger than a JPG of the same image. Since the preview inside the raw file is itself a JPEG, a high-quality JPG is fine when you only need small files.
Where does an RWL to PNG conversion fit in a photography workflow?
It is handy when someone on the team, a client or a retoucher needs to see a frame and does not have software that reads Leica raw files. Convert the selects, share the PNGs, and keep the original RWL files as your masters for real editing.
