HDR to PNG Converter
HDR to PNG Converter turns Radiance .hdr files into PNGs that open in any browser, editor or operating system. It decodes the floating-point image data, tone maps it automatically to a normal brightness range and saves a lossless 8-bit PNG. Photographers can convert one file or a batch, entirely in the browser, with nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions
What does the HDR to PNG Converter do?
It converts Radiance .hdr images into PNG files that open in any browser, editor or operating system. You can select several .hdr files at once and convert them all with one click; each is tone mapped to a standard brightness range and downloads as a PNG with its original name. PNG is lossless, so the converted image is saved without the compression artifacts a JPG would add.
How do I convert HDR files to PNG?
Click the upload area and select one or more .hdr files. Each appears in the list as Pending and the Convert All button becomes active. Click it and the files are processed one at a time, switching to Processing and then Done as each PNG downloads. If a file cannot be read, its status shows the reason. If your browser asks to allow multiple downloads, accept so the whole batch can save.
Why convert HDR to PNG rather than JPG?
PNG compression is lossless, so fine gradients in skies and interiors are stored without JPG blocking, which makes PNG a good choice for further retouching, web graphics that need crisp edges, or archiving a viewable copy. JPG files are much smaller, so choose JPG for quick sharing and PNG when quality matters more than file size.
Does PNG keep the full dynamic range of an HDR file?
No. Radiance .hdr files store brightness values far beyond what a standard display shows, while the PNG holds 8 bits per channel, so the tool tone maps each image automatically. It sets exposure from the scene's average brightness, compresses highlights with a Reinhard curve so the brightest pixel lands on white, and applies the sRGB curve. For control over how highlights and shadows are compressed, tone map the HDR in dedicated software and use this tool for quick viewable copies.
Which .hdr files can be converted?
The tool reads Radiance RGBE files, the format behind the .hdr extension, with its own decoder rather than relying on browser support. It handles both run-length encoding styles and files stored in XYZE color, which it converts to RGB. Other formats saved with an .hdr name, or truncated and corrupt files, show an error such as Not a Radiance HDR file in the status list, so you can see exactly which files in the batch did not convert.
Is the HDR to PNG converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, with no watermark and nothing to install. Your files are converted in your browser on your own device and are never uploaded. To get started, you answer once that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and every tool is unlocked from then on.
