What is a Mamiya MEF file?
MEF is the raw format written by Mamiya medium format digital cameras and backs. Like other raw formats, it stores sensor data rather than a finished picture, so many viewers, phones and web platforms cannot open it. Converting to PNG gives you a widely supported, lossless image that anyone can view, while you keep the MEF file as your master for full editing.
How do I convert MEF to PNG?
Drop your files onto the Drop Mamiya MEF files here area, or click it to browse from your computer. Each selected file is listed with a Ready status. Click Convert to PNG and the files are processed in order, with the status changing to Extracting and then Done. Each PNG downloads automatically, keeping the original file name with a .png extension.
Does the converter process the full RAW data?
No. The tool does not develop the sensor data and offers no controls such as white balance, exposure or color profile. It extracts the largest JPEG preview the camera stored in each MEF file, applies the orientation and saves it as a PNG, at the preview's resolution and 8 bits per channel. If a file holds no preview the browser can decode, no PNG is created. For final color work, use your raw editor.
Can I convert several MEF files at once?
Yes. You can select multiple MEF files in one go, and the converter works through them one at a time, updating the status of each file in the list as it goes. Each finished PNG downloads separately. If your browser asks for permission to download multiple files, allow it so every converted image is saved.
When is PNG the right output for medium format files?
PNG is lossless, so saving the preview adds no new compression artifacts, which is useful when the image will be edited further or passed to someone who needs a clean proof or reference. The files are larger than JPGs. If a client only needs a quick look, a JPG is smaller; if they need a print master, export a TIFF from your raw editor instead.
