EXR to PNG Converter
The EXR to PNG Converter turns OpenEXR renders and HDR files into PNGs that open in any viewer, browser or layout program. It decodes each EXR in your browser, tone-maps the high dynamic range to a screen-ready image with automatic exposure, and saves a lossless PNG, so photographers can convert a whole batch in one click.

Frequently asked questions
Why convert EXR files to PNG?
EXR is a high-dynamic-range format used in visual effects, 3D rendering and HDR work, and most browsers, photo viewers and social platforms cannot open it. PNG opens almost everywhere and is lossless, so the converted image keeps clean detail without compression artifacts. That makes PNG a good choice for reviewing renders, sharing previews and placing images in layouts.
How do I convert EXR to PNG?
Click the area labeled Click to upload or drag & drop EXR files and select one or more .exr files. Each file appears in the list with a Pending status, and the Convert All to PNG button activates. Click it and each file shows Processing and then Done. The PNGs download one by one with the original names and a .png extension. Single-part scanline EXRs with ZIP, ZIPS, RLE or no compression are supported; for PIZ, PXR24, B44 or DWA compression, or tiled, multi-part or deep files, the status explains what to re-save.
What happens to the high dynamic range in an EXR?
PNG is a standard-range format, so it cannot hold the extended brightness values an EXR stores. The converter tone-maps each image: it sets exposure from the scene's average brightness, compresses highlights with a Reinhard curve so the brightest pixel lands on white, and applies the sRGB curve. The result is an 8-bit, screen-ready picture, and detail beyond that range is not carried over. Keep the original EXR as your master for any future grading or compositing.
Should I choose PNG or JPG when converting EXR?
Choose PNG when you want a lossless copy for further editing, compositing or close inspection, or when the image contains fine text, graphics or smooth gradients that JPG compression can mark. Choose JPG when small file size matters more, for example for emailing previews or posting online. PNG files are larger, but every pixel of the converted image is preserved exactly.
Can I batch convert EXR files to PNG?
Yes. Select as many EXR files as you need and click Convert All to PNG once. The converter works through the list in order, updating the status of each file, and every PNG downloads as soon as it is ready. Your browser may ask once for permission to download multiple files; allowing it lets the batch finish without interruption.
Is the EXR to PNG Converter free and secure?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs nothing installed. Conversion runs in your browser on your own device, so your renders and HDR files are never uploaded anywhere. The first time you use a tool, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log in to a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool on the site.
