Frequently asked questions

What does the PNG to AVIF Converter do?

It re-encodes PNG images as AVIF, a modern format that usually produces much smaller files than PNG for photographic content. You can add several PNGs at once, choose a quality level, and the tool saves an .avif file for each one using the original file name. It suits photographers preparing images for websites, blogs and online galleries where page speed matters.

How do I convert PNG to AVIF?

Click the area labeled Click or Drag PNG files here, or drag your PNGs onto it. Only PNG files are accepted. Set the AVIF Quality slider, which starts at 80 percent, then click Convert to AVIF. Each file shows its status while it processes, and the converted files download one after another. Use Clear All to empty the list before starting a new batch.

What AVIF quality setting should I use for photos?

The slider runs from Smallest Size to Highest Quality, 1 to 100 percent, and lower values give smaller files. The default of 80 percent is a sensible starting point for portfolio images. For detailed landscapes or delicate skin tones, try 85 to 90 and compare the results. For thumbnails or background images, 60 to 70 is often enough and saves even more space.

Does every browser support converting to AVIF?

Yes, the converter writes genuine AVIF files in any current browser. Where your browser has its own AVIF encoder, that is used. Where it does not, the page brings its own encoder, which also runs on your device, so you never end up with a PNG that has simply been renamed. If a particular file cannot be converted, its status shows Error and nothing is saved for it. Once created, AVIF files display in most current browsers, which is what matters for your website visitors.

Should photographers use AVIF on their website?

AVIF is a strong choice for web delivery because smaller files load faster, which helps visitors on phones and supports good page speed scores. Keep your original PNG or TIFF masters for printing and archiving, and use AVIF only for the copies you publish online. If you edit with Imagen, which learns your personal editing style, export your finished images first and convert the web copies here.

Is the converter free, and are my PNG files kept private?

Yes to both. The converter is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. Your PNGs are converted on your own device and are never sent anywhere. The only requirement is a one-time step: confirm that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool in the collection.
