ICO to BMP Converter
The ICO to BMP Converter turns Windows icon files into standard 24-bit bitmaps for software, documentation and design work that needs plain BMP images. Add one icon or a whole batch, click Convert to BMP, and each file downloads under its original name. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, with nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions
What does the ICO to BMP Converter do?
It opens .ico icon files in your browser and saves each one as a BMP, the uncompressed bitmap format used throughout Windows. The output is a standard 24-bit, bottom-up BMP that older programs, resource editors and many embedded systems can read without trouble, even when they cannot open icon files directly.
How do I convert ICO files to BMP?
Click the upload area and select your ICO files; several can be selected at once, and choosing again replaces the list. Each file appears in the list as Ready and the Convert to BMP button becomes active. Click it and each file shows Processing, then Done, as its BMP downloads with the same name. Allow multiple downloads if your browser asks.
ICO files can contain several sizes. Which one is converted?
An ICO can bundle several versions of the same icon, for example 16, 32 and 256 pixels. The tool converts the image your browser decodes from the file, at that image's own pixel dimensions, without resizing it. If you need a particular size, export just that size from your icon editor and convert it here.
What happens to transparent areas?
BMP files written by this tool do not include an alpha channel, so transparent pixels in the icon are placed on a white background. Icons designed for dark backgrounds may show a white box around them as a result. If you need to keep transparency, convert the icon to PNG or TIFF instead, since both can store an alpha channel.
Why is the BMP larger than the ICO file?
Modern icon files are often compressed, while this BMP stores every pixel uncompressed at 24 bits. A 256-pixel icon becomes roughly 192 KB as a BMP. The image quality is identical, because no lossy compression is involved at any point. The extra size is the price of maximum compatibility with simple bitmap readers.
Is the ICO to BMP converter free?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Your icons are converted in your browser on your own device and never uploaded. The first time you open a tool, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; that unlocks every tool on the site.
