PNG to BMP Converter

The free PNG to BMP Converter turns PNG images into uncompressed 24-bit BMP files for legacy software, older printers and specialized hardware that will not read PNG. Add several PNGs at once and each downloads as a BMP with the same name. Transparent areas are filled with white, since the BMP it writes has no alpha channel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PNG and BMP formats?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a compressed image format that supports transparency and is widely used on the web. BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed raster image format developed by Microsoft. Because BMP files are uncompressed, they store color data for every single pixel without any loss of quality, resulting in much larger file sizes than PNGs. Photographers and digital artists often convert to BMP when they need an uncompressed file for specific legacy software, industrial printing processes, or specialized archiving where compression is not permitted.

How do I use the PNG to BMP Converter?

Drop your PNG files onto the upload area, or click it to browse; you can add several at once. Click Convert to BMP, and each file is decoded and written as an uncompressed 24-bit BMP that downloads automatically with the original file name. The status next to each file changes to Done as it finishes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device, your original PNGs are left untouched, and Clear empties the list for the next batch.

Why would a photographer need to convert a PNG to a BMP file?

While PNG is excellent for web display and retaining transparency, some specific workflows require BMP files. Photographers might need to convert their images to BMP when working with older photo editing software that does not fully support PNG. Certain industrial printing equipment, embedded systems and specialized graphic applications also require uncompressed Bitmap files to read the pixel data correctly. Converting to BMP gives maximum compatibility with these older or highly specialized systems while keeping the image's colors and resolution.

Does converting from PNG to BMP improve the image quality?

No, converting an image from PNG to BMP will not improve its visual quality. PNG is a lossless compression format, meaning it already retains all the original image data. When you convert that file to a BMP, you are simply changing how the data is stored, from a compressed state to an uncompressed one. The resulting BMP looks identical to the original PNG, apart from any transparent areas, which become white. The reason for this conversion is software or hardware compatibility, not image enhancement or upscaling.

Why did my file size increase so much after conversion?

A significant increase in file size is completely normal and expected when converting from PNG to BMP. PNG uses an efficient, lossless compression algorithm to keep file sizes relatively small while maintaining quality. The BMP files this converter writes are uncompressed: they store three bytes for every pixel in the image without any compression to save space. Consequently, a small PNG file can easily become a very large BMP file, especially if the original image has a high resolution.

What happens to my transparent backgrounds when converting a PNG to a BMP?

The transparency is lost. The BMP files this converter writes are 24-bit and have no alpha channel, so before encoding, the image is drawn onto a solid white background. Every transparent area becomes white, and semi-transparent edges blend into white. If you are preparing an image for a workflow that requires a transparent background, keep the file in its original PNG format, or use another format that supports alpha channels, such as TIFF.

How does the PNG to BMP Converter handle color depth?

Every BMP this converter writes is a 24-bit true-color file, with 8 bits each for red, green and blue. A standard 24-bit PNG keeps its exact RGB values. A 16-bit-per-channel PNG is reduced to 8 bits per channel, because the browser draws it at that depth, and a palette or grayscale PNG is expanded to full RGB. The alpha channel is not kept. The BMP carries no color profile, so convert your image to sRGB before converting if its colors need to match across devices.

Are my photographs secure when I convert them?

Yes. Each image is processed entirely within your web browser, on your own device, and is never sent anywhere. Because Imagen never receives your photographs, we cannot store them, claim ownership of them, or use them for training or marketing, and there is nothing to delete once you have saved your BMP. Client work and unreleased images stay as private as the computer you are using. The converter is also free and adds no watermark to the result.

Is there a file size or resolution limit for the conversion?

The tool sets no fixed limit. Because the conversion runs in your browser, the practical limit is your device's memory and the largest image your browser can draw. A BMP needs three bytes per pixel, so a 24-megapixel image becomes a file of roughly 72 MB. Typical camera files convert without trouble, but very large panoramas or gigapixel stitches may fail on phones or older computers. If a file shows Error, scale it down in your editing software and try again.

Can I use the PNG to BMP Converter on my mobile device?

Yes. The converter works in current mobile browsers as well as on desktop, with nothing to install. Open the page on your phone or tablet, tap the upload area and pick PNG files from your photo library or device storage. The conversion works the same way as on a computer and runs on the device itself. Very large images can run into the lower memory limits of some phones, so for big files a desktop browser is the safer choice.
