GIF to APNG Converter
The GIF to APNG Converter turns an animated GIF into an animated PNG that keeps every frame, its timing and its transparency. Photographers can use it to move cinemagraph previews, before-and-after reveals and animated logos to a lossless format with full alpha support. Conversion happens in your browser, and the result downloads as a standard .png file.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GIF and APNG?
Both formats store animation, but GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame and only on-or-off transparency. APNG, or Animated PNG, builds on the PNG format, so it can hold full 24-bit color and smooth alpha transparency. That makes it a better fit for animated logos, cinemagraph previews and overlays where GIF dithering and jagged edges look poor.
How do I convert a GIF to APNG?
Click the upload area and choose a GIF from your device. The file name appears in the list and the Convert to APNG button becomes active. Click it, and the button shows Processing while the tool decodes every frame and writes the animated PNG in your browser. When it reads Converted, your browser downloads the result under the GIF's name with a .png extension, which is the standard extension for APNG files. To convert another GIF, click the upload area again and pick the next file.
Will converting improve the colors of my GIF?
No converter can restore color that the GIF never stored. The output keeps the GIF's existing pixels exactly, because PNG compression is lossless, so you will not add new artifacts or dithering. To get the full color benefit of APNG, export the animation from its original source frames rather than from a GIF that has already been reduced to 256 colors.
Which browsers and apps can display APNG files?
All current major browsers display APNG in an ordinary image tag, so it works on most websites. Because APNG files use the .png extension, apps that do not understand the animation simply show a still image, which makes the format a safe fallback. Check your target platform, though, since some social networks convert or flatten uploaded images.
Why would a photographer convert GIFs to APNG?
If you share short animated previews, such as before and after edit reveals, cinemagraphs or animated logos, APNG keeps them lossless and supports soft transparent edges over any background. It is also handy for portfolio sites where re-saving a GIF could add artifacts. Expect a bigger file, though: the converter stores every frame as a complete lossless picture, so the APNG is usually larger than the GIF it came from. For long or photographic clips, a video format is usually smaller.
Is the GIF to APNG converter free?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and runs entirely in your browser, so your GIF is processed on your own device and never leaves it. Access takes one step the first time: you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account. After that, every tool on the site is unlocked.
