APNG Frame Extractor

The APNG Frame Extractor splits an animated PNG into its individual frames and saves each one as a standalone PNG. Every frame is rebuilt exactly as it appears in the animation, at full size with transparency kept, so photographers and designers can reuse a single moment, edit frames separately or check an animation frame by frame.

Frequently asked questions

What does the APNG Frame Extractor do?

It reads the animation data inside an APNG file and rebuilds every frame as a separate PNG image. Many APNGs store only the part of each frame that changes, and they rely on rules that say how each new patch is blended over the previous frame and what is cleared afterward. The tool follows those rules and composites each patch onto the full canvas, so every saved PNG looks exactly like that moment of the animation, not like a small fragment.

How do I extract frames from an APNG?

Click the file area and choose one .png or .apng file. The file name appears under Selected, along with an Extract Frames button. Click it, and the button shows Extracting and then Done. A list titled Extracted Frames appears with one row per frame, Frame 1, Frame 2 and so on, each with its own Download link. Files are named after your APNG with a numbered suffix, such as banner_frame_001.png, so they stay in order.

Can I download all the frames at once?

Each frame has its own Download link; the tool does not bundle them into a ZIP file. For short animations, click each link in turn. For long ones, download just the frames you need. Because every file name carries a three-digit frame number, the frames sort in the correct order in any folder, ready to import into an editor, a slideshow or a video timeline as an image sequence.

What if my file is a normal PNG or will not open?

A regular, non-animated PNG gives a single frame, a copy of the image. If the file is not a PNG at all, the tool says so; if the file is damaged or a frame cannot be decoded, a message explains what went wrong instead of producing broken files. Some APNGs also carry a separate still image for programs that cannot play animation; that image is not part of the animation, so it is not listed as a frame.

Do the extracted frames lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless, and each frame is rebuilt from the original image data, so colors and detail match the animation exactly. Every frame is saved at the full size of the animation canvas, and transparent areas stay transparent. What a still PNG cannot hold is timing: the delay each frame was shown for in the animation is not stored in the extracted files, so note it if you plan to reassemble the frames.

Is the APNG Frame Extractor free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. The file is read and the frames are rebuilt in your browser on your own device, so your animation never leaves it. The first time, you answer that you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and that unlocks this tool and every other one on the site.
