PSD Layer Extractor

Need one element from a layered Photoshop file without opening Photoshop? The PSD Layer Extractor reads a .psd document in your browser and saves every pixel layer as a PNG with transparency, bundling several layers into one ZIP, so photographers and retouchers can pull out cutouts, overlays or composite parts with no software to install.

Frequently asked questions

What does the PSD Layer Extractor do?

It opens a Photoshop document in your browser and saves each pixel layer as its own PNG image, so you can use individual pieces of a layered file without the original software. Layers inside groups are included, hidden ones too, and each file is named after its group and layer. Every layer is saved as stored, without its mask, layer style or blend mode applied. A PSD with no separate layers gives you its flattened composite instead.

How do I extract layers from a PSD file?

Click the area labeled Click or Drag PSD File, or drop a .psd onto its file chooser, and pick one document. The file name appears with the status Ready to extract. Click Extract Layers, and the status updates as each layer is encoded. If the document has a single pixel layer, you get one PNG. If it has several, they arrive together as one ZIP file named after the PSD, with the PNGs numbered in layer order inside it.

Why are the layers exported as PNG?

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which matters for layers. A cutout subject, a logo or a texture usually sits on a transparent background inside a PSD, and PNG keeps that transparency intact so the piece can be placed over other images. Each PNG is trimmed to the layer's own content rather than the full document size, so its position in the original layout is not kept. A JPG would fill the empty areas with a solid color and add compression artifacts.

Can I extract layers from several PSD files at once?

The extractor works on one PSD at a time. After the first file is done, select the next document and click Extract Layers again. Large, high-resolution PSDs with many layers take longer to read, because all the work happens on your own computer, so close other heavy apps if a big file feels slow. Documents in RGB, grayscale or bitmap mode are supported; a CMYK document shows an error, so convert it to RGB in Photoshop first.

When would a photographer need to extract PSD layers?

Common cases include reusing a cutout from a composite, pulling a watermark or logo layer for other images, sharing one element of an album design with a client, or checking a retoucher's work when you do not have Photoshop on the current machine. It saves opening heavy desktop software for a simple export.

Is the PSD Layer Extractor free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. Your PSD is read in your browser on your own device and is never sent anywhere. The first time you use it, you confirm that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool in the collection.
