Frequently asked questions
What does the Sharpness Checker measure?
It measures how much fine edge detail a photo contains and turns that into a single score. The tool converts the image to grayscale and runs a Laplacian filter, a standard edge detector, across every pixel at full resolution. Strong, crisp edges produce large responses and a high score, while soft focus and motion blur produce weak responses and a low score.
How do I check if a photo is sharp?
Click or Drag Image to Check Sharpness and choose a photo. The tool analyzes it right away and shows a score along with a quality rating. To test another frame, click Check Another and select the next image. One image is checked at a time, so you can compare two frames by checking each and noting the scores.
What do the scores and ratings mean?
The score is the average strength of the Laplacian edge response across the image. Scores above 1000 are rated Excellent, scores above 500 are rated Good, and anything at 500 or below is rated Soft / Blurry. Treat the numbers as relative rather than absolute: they are most useful for comparing frames from the same scene, shot with the same camera and resolution.
Why does a sharp photo sometimes get a low score?
The score depends on how much detail is in the frame, not only on focus. A crisp portrait against a smooth, blurred background or a clean studio sweep has few edges, so it can score lower than a busy landscape that is slightly soft. Noise and heavy texture can raise the score. Compare similar images, and confirm critical frames by zooming in on the eyes.
How can a sharpness score help when culling a shoot?
When you have several near-identical frames, such as a burst during a first kiss or a group shot, checking each one gives an objective number to back up your eye. Keep the highest scorer and reject the softer frames. For full shoots, Imagen's AI culling software can sort large sets of images so you spend less time comparing frames one by one.
Is the Sharpness Checker free, and are my photos uploaded?
It is free and your photos are never uploaded. The analysis runs in your browser, on your own device, with no software to install. To use it, you answer once that you are a photographer and create or sign in to a free Imagen account, which opens every tool on the site.
