Photo Keyword Tagging Tool

Keywords make a photo archive searchable, but only if you record them. The Photo Keyword Tagging Tool gives photographers a simple way to list a batch of images and type comma-separated tags for each one. When you are done, download everything as a JSON file you can keep with the shoot, share with a team or use elsewhere.

Are you a photographer?

Frequently asked questions

What does the Photo Keyword Tagging Tool do?

It creates a keyword list for a set of photos. After you add images, each file name appears with a text field where you type tags separated by commas, such as wedding, ceremony, golden hour. Clicking Download Tagged Data (JSON) saves a file named photo_tags.json that lists every photo's name alongside its tags. Extra spaces around tags and empty entries are removed.

How do I tag my photos?

Click the area labeled Click or Drag Photos and select one or more images. A list appears with a tag field under each file name. Type the keywords for each photo, separated by commas, then move to the next field so the entry is recorded. When every photo is tagged, click Download Tagged Data (JSON) to save the list to your computer.

Does it write keywords into my image files?

No. The tool does not change your photos or embed IPTC or XMP keywords in them. It records the tags in a separate JSON file keyed by file name. That makes it useful for planning, sharing tag lists with an assistant, feeding a website or script, or keeping a record you can later apply in your cataloging software.

Which files can I add, and how many?

The tool is designed for JPG and PNG, as noted in the upload area, and because it only reads file names, other image types your browser lets you select will appear in the list too. You can add many photos in one go, and adding more later appends them to the same list. Since the images themselves are not processed, even large batches load quickly.

What makes good photo keywords?

Cover who, what, where and when. Include the subject or client, the type of shoot, the location, notable elements like props or colors, mood words and any terms you will search by later. Keep a consistent vocabulary, for example always using portrait rather than switching between portrait and headshot, so searches return everything. Five to fifteen focused keywords per image is a practical range.

Is the tagging tool free and private?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no installation, and runs entirely in your browser, so your photos and tags stay on your device and are never uploaded. The only step is a one-time check: answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account. After that, every tool, including this one, is unlocked.
