Frequently asked questions
What is the Photo Hue Shifter and how does it work?
It is a free tool that applies a global hue rotation to a photo. Every color in the image is moved the same number of degrees around the color wheel, so at 120 degrees reds turn roughly green, greens turn blue, and blues turn red, while grays, whites, and blacks stay neutral. It uses the browser's standard hue-rotate filter, previews the result at full size as you move the slider, and saves a new file, leaving your original untouched.
How do I isolate a specific color when using the Photo Hue Shifter?
You cannot; the tool has a single slider that shifts all colors at once, with no color picker or range selection. To change just one element, such as a dress or a backdrop, shift the whole image here, then in a layer-based editor place the shifted version over the original and mask it so only that element shows the new color. For selective adjustments without layers, use the color mixer or HSL panel in your raw editor.
Why should photographers adjust hues instead of just changing the white balance?
They do different jobs. White balance corrects the overall temperature and tint so that neutral tones look neutral under different light, and it is mainly corrective. A hue shift changes which colors appear in the image, which is a creative choice: turning a scene surreal, testing alternative color schemes for a product or backdrop, or creating graphic effects. Note that this tool rotates all colors together, so it is suited to bold global looks rather than subtle grading.
When is the best time to apply hue adjustments in the photo editing workflow?
Apply hue changes after exposure and white balance are settled, so you are shifting accurate colors rather than a color cast. With this tool, that means finishing your main edit in your usual software, exporting a JPG or PNG, and then experimenting here. Because the tool saves a new file each time, you can try several angles, compare them, and keep the original edit unchanged.
What should I do if shifting the hue introduces color banding in my image?
Banding shows up when smooth gradients, such as skies or studio backdrops, are pushed through a strong color change in an 8-bit file, especially one that was already compressed. Start from the highest quality export you have rather than a small web JPG, and try a different angle, since some hue rotations stress certain colors more than others. The tool saves a lossless PNG, so it does not add compression artifacts of its own.
How does a hue adjustment differ from changing color saturation or luminance?
Hue, saturation, and luminance are the three properties of a color. Hue is the color itself, such as red, green, or blue, and shifting it moves the color around the wheel. Saturation is the intensity, from vivid to gray, and luminance is how light or dark it is. This tool changes hue only. Because it works on red, green, and blue values directly, some colors may look slightly lighter or darker after rotating, but it has no separate saturation or brightness control.
Does the Photo Hue Shifter support RAW file formats?
No. The tool opens images your browser can display, such as JPEG, PNG, and WebP, and browsers cannot decode raw files. Export a high-quality JPEG or PNG from your raw editor first, then open that here. For editing raw files across entire shoots in your own style, Imagen's desktop software works directly with the raw formats of all major camera brands.
How can I save my edited photo after adjusting the colors?
Click Download Image below the slider. The shifted photo is saved as a PNG at the same pixel dimensions as your original, named hue-shifted followed by the original file name. PNG is lossless, so detail is not reduced, though files are larger than JPGs. Check your downloads folder if your browser does not ask where to save. The other button takes you back to choose a different photo.
Why are the skin tones in my portrait looking unnatural after a global hue shift?
Skin falls in a narrow range of orange and red hues, and people notice the smallest change to it. A global shift moves skin along with everything else, so even 15 or 20 degrees can look sickly. With this tool, keep portrait shifts very small, or shift the whole image and then, in a layer-based editor, mask the shifted version so it applies only to the background or clothing while the skin stays as it was.
Can this tool be used to fix chromatic aberration in landscape photography?
No. Chromatic aberration is the purple or green fringing along high-contrast edges caused by a lens not focusing all colors at the same point. A global hue shift would change the fringe color along with every other color in the scene, so it cannot remove it. Use the lens correction or defringe tools in your raw processor, which detect those edges and neutralize just the affected pixels.
