Photo Clarity Tool brings out crisp detail and edge definition in soft-looking photos. Upload an image, set the Clarity / Sharpness Strength from 0 to 100 percent, and click Apply Clarity. Frequently asked questions

What does the Photo Clarity Tool do?

It increases the definition of edges and fine detail in a photo. The tool applies a 3 by 3 sharpening filter that compares each pixel with its four direct neighbors and exaggerates the difference, so edges become crisper and textures more pronounced. It is a quick way to add bite to images that look slightly soft from the camera, from resizing, or from noise reduction.

How do I apply clarity to a photo?

Click or drag an image onto the Click to upload or drag image area. Once it is selected, the Clarity / Sharpness Strength slider appears, set to 50 percent. Move it to the strength you want, from 0 to 100 percent, then click Apply Clarity. The sharpened photo downloads as a PNG with clarity- added to the start of its file name.

Which strength setting should I use?

Start around 20 to 40 percent for portraits, so skin texture is not exaggerated, and 40 to 60 percent for landscapes, architecture, and products where detail is the point. High settings can create bright halos along edges and emphasize noise, especially in high ISO images. Zero leaves the photo unchanged, so you can work up from a low value and compare.

Why is the output saved as PNG?

PNG is lossless, so the extra edge detail added by sharpening is saved exactly, without JPG compression softening it again or adding artifacts around the newly crisp edges. PNG files are larger than JPGs. If you need a smaller file for web use, convert the result to JPG at a high quality setting after checking it.

Where should sharpening fit in my editing workflow?

Sharpening is usually one of the last steps: finish exposure, color, and retouching first, resize the image to its final output size, and then sharpen for that output. Sharpening before heavy edits or before downsizing tends to exaggerate artifacts. Keep an unsharpened master, so you can prepare separate versions for print, web, and social media.

Is the Photo Clarity Tool free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark, and needs no software. Your photo is sharpened on your own device inside the browser and is never uploaded. To get started, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free account once, which unlocks this and every other tool.
