Frequently asked questions
What does the Image Quality Score Tool measure?
It scores four technical qualities, measured on a copy of the photo scaled to 1024 pixels on its longest side. Sharpness, worth 40 points, uses the variance of the Laplacian, a standard measure of edge detail. Exposure, worth 25, checks average brightness and the share of clipped white and crushed black pixels. Contrast, worth 20, uses the spread of brightness values. Resolution, worth 15, uses the original pixel count, with full points from 12 megapixels.
How do I get a quality score for my image?
Click the upload area and choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP image. Analysis starts automatically, and the result appears below: the Quality Score out of 100, then lines for resolution, sharpness, exposure and contrast with the points each earned, followed by a list of tips. To check another photo, click the upload area again and choose a new file, and the results update in place.
How should I read the score?
Treat it as a technical check, not a verdict on the photo. The breakdown matters more than the total: a low sharpness figure points to missed focus or camera shake, while lost exposure points usually mean clipping or an image that is too dark or too bright overall. Deliberate low-key and high-key images lose exposure points by design, so judge them by the tips, and compare similar shots rather than different scenes.
Can noise or sharpening affect the score?
Yes. The sharpness measure responds to fine pixel-to-pixel variation, so high-ISO noise, film grain and heavy sharpening can raise it even though they do not make a photo better. Smooth subjects, such as a studio portrait on a plain backdrop, can also score lower than an equally sharp landscape full of foliage. Compare images processed the same way, and check high scores at 100 percent zoom to confirm the detail is real.
How can I use it to choose between similar frames?
Run each frame of a burst through the tool and compare the sharpness lines in particular. When composition and lighting are nearly identical, the frame with the higher sharpness figure is usually the one with crisper focus and less motion blur. For whole shoots with thousands of frames, Imagen, AI photo editing and culling software for professional photographers, is built for that selection work.
Is the Image Quality Score Tool free?
Yes. It is free and needs no software. Your image is analyzed in your browser on your own device and never uploaded. The first time you open a tool, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; that one step unlocks every tool on the site.
