Frequently asked questions

What is a favicon and why do photographers need one for their portfolio?

A favicon is the small square icon that appears in a web browser tab next to your website title. For photographers, having a custom favicon helps establish brand identity and makes your portfolio look professional. When potential clients have multiple tabs open, a distinct favicon ensures your photography website remains easily identifiable. It also appears in browser bookmarks and mobile home screen shortcuts, reinforcing your brand presence across different devices and platforms.

How do I use the Favicon Generator to create an icon from my photography logo?

Drag your logo or monogram onto the upload area, or click it to browse. The tool accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP and SVG files. Choose a scaling mode: Cover crops the image so it fills the square, while Fit shrinks it so the whole logo shows, with transparent padding on the short sides. Click Generate Favicons and six previews appear, at 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 pixels. Each has its own Download button and saves as a PNG named for its size, such as favicon-32x32.png.

Why should I use an ICO file instead of a standard JPEG for my website tab icon?

ICO is the original favicon format and can bundle several sizes in one file, and both ICO and PNG support transparency, which JPEG does not. A JPEG always has a solid background, so a logo saved that way shows a box behind it in the tab. This tool does not produce an ICO file. It exports PNGs, which every current browser accepts as a favicon and which most website builders ask for anyway. If an older system insists on a favicon.ico, convert the 32 or 48 pixel PNG with an ICO converter.

When is the best time to update my website favicon?

You should update your website favicon whenever you undergo a brand refresh, change your photography logo, or update your primary brand colors. It is also a good practice to review your favicon when migrating your photography portfolio to a new website builder or platform, as different systems might have updated size requirements. Additionally, if you notice your current icon looks blurry or pixelated on high-resolution displays like Retina screens, it is time to generate a new, higher-quality version to maintain a professional appearance.

Why is my newly uploaded favicon not showing up in my web browser?

If your new favicon is not appearing, the most common culprit is your browser cache. Web browsers aggressively cache favicons to speed up page loading times. To resolve this, you need to clear your browser cache and cookies, then hard refresh your photography website. If the issue persists, verify that the file path in your website's HTML head section correctly points to the new favicon file location. Also, ensure you uploaded the correct file format and that your website hosting platform has finished propagating the changes.

What is the difference between a favicon and an apple-touch-icon?

A standard favicon is used mainly for desktop browser tabs and bookmarks, traditionally as an ICO file or small PNGs at 16 or 32 pixels. An apple-touch-icon is a larger square image for Apple devices. When someone saves your photography portfolio to the home screen of an iPhone or iPad, iOS looks for the apple-touch-icon to display as the app icon. This generator includes a 180 by 180 pixel PNG for that purpose alongside the small browser sizes, so you can link both from your site.

What dimensions and aspect ratio should my original image be before using the Favicon Generator?

For the best results, start with a square image, meaning an aspect ratio of 1:1. If your photography logo is rectangular, you can place it on a square canvas, use a simplified monogram, or choose Fit mode, which keeps the whole logo visible and fills the rest of the square with transparency. The original should be at least 512 by 512 pixels, the largest size the tool creates, or an SVG, which scales cleanly. A large, crisp source keeps its clarity when scaled down to 16 or 32 pixels.

How can I fix a favicon that looks blurry or unrecognizable?

A blurry favicon usually occurs when a highly detailed image or a long line of text is scaled down to a tiny size. To fix this, you need to simplify your design. Instead of using your full photography business name, use a single initial, a simple monogram, or a distinct graphic element from your logo. Ensure the design has high contrast and minimal fine lines. Once you have a simplified, bold design, run it through the generator again to create a crisp, easily recognizable icon for your portfolio.

Do these generated favicons work with popular photography website builders like WordPress or Squarespace?

Yes. The PNG files work with the website builders photographers commonly use, including WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and Pixieset. Most platforms have a site icon or favicon field in their appearance or branding settings, where you upload a single square image; the 512 pixel PNG is a good choice when a builder asks for one large file and creates the smaller sizes itself. If you edit your site's HTML yourself, link the 32 pixel file as the icon and the 180 pixel file as the apple-touch-icon.

What file formats are included when I download my new favicon package?

There is no ZIP package and no ICO file. You get six PNG files with transparency support, each saved with its own Download button: 16x16 and 32x32 for browser tabs, 48x48 for newer desktop standards, 180x180 for the Apple touch icon, 192x192 for Android home screen shortcuts and 512x512 for progressive web app splash screens. The tool does not write the HTML link tags or a web manifest, so add those yourself or let your website builder handle them.
