Frequently asked questions
What does the Clipping Warning Tool do?
It finds clipped highlights in an image. Every pixel that has reached pure white, with red, green and blue all at the maximum value of 255, is painted bright red. Everything else is turned into a dimmed grayscale version of your photo, so the red areas stand out clearly. The result appears on the page and downloads as clipped_warning.png.
How do I check a photo for clipping?
Click the upload area or drop an image on it. When it loads, the Highlight Clipped Pixels and Clear buttons appear. Click Highlight Clipped Pixels to see the warning map, with clipped areas in red over a darkened grayscale image. It also downloads as a PNG for reference. Click Clear to reset the tool and check another photo.
Does it detect clipped shadows or single color channels?
No. The tool flags only pixels where all three channels are at 255, which is pure white with no detail left. It does not mark crushed blacks, and it does not catch areas where just one channel has clipped, such as a saturated red flower or a bright sunset sky. For those, check the per-channel histogram in your editing software.
Which images should I check?
Use it on exported JPG or PNG files, the version clients and labs will actually see. It is especially useful for wedding dresses, white backgrounds, skies, windows in interiors and studio shots with bright key lights, where lost detail is easy to miss on a bright screen. A small amount of red on specular highlights, such as reflections, is normal and usually fine.
How can I fix clipped highlights?
If the image came from a RAW file, go back to the RAW and lower highlights or exposure before exporting again, since RAW files often hold more highlight detail than the JPG showed. Once a JPG is clipped, the detail is gone and can only be painted over. For future shoots, watch your camera's highlight warning and expose to protect the brightest important detail.
Is the Clipping Warning Tool free and private?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs nothing installed. Your image is analyzed in your own browser and never uploaded. To use it, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account once, which unlocks every tool. Imagen also makes AI photo editing software that learns your personal editing style.
