Frequently asked questions

What is the App Icon Generator?

It is a free tool that turns a single image into the square icon sizes most often needed for iOS and Android apps. It takes the largest square from the center of your image and scales it to eleven sizes: 1024 pixels for the App Store, 512 for Google Play, 180, 167, 152 and 120 for iPhone and iPad, and 192, 144, 96, 72 and 48 for Android screen densities. Each size is saved as a PNG with its own download link.

How do I use the App Icon Generator to create icons from my photos?

Click the file area or drag an image onto it. A panel shows the file name and its dimensions in pixels. Click Generate App Icons, and a list appears with a preview of every icon, its platform, its name and its size. Click Download next to each icon you need. Files are named after your image with the platform and size added, such as logo_iOS_180x180.png, so they are easy to sort.

Why should photographers use a dedicated icon generator instead of standard editing software?

Exporting the same image at eleven different sizes by hand is tedious and easy to get wrong, with every export needing its own dimensions and file name. This tool does the cropping and scaling for all of them in one click, and it labels each file with its platform and pixel size. That saves you looking up the common icon sizes and setting up repeated exports, so you can spend the time on your photography and editing instead.

When is the best time to utilize this tool in my photography workflow?

You should utilize this tool whenever you are preparing to deliver a digital product that requires a branded touchpoint. Many modern photographers create personalized mobile gallery applications for their clients to install on their smartphones. Generating a custom icon using a standout photo from their specific session adds a highly professional and personalized finish to the client experience. Additionally, it is useful when you are developing a portfolio app for your own business, creating custom desktop shortcuts for your various editing catalogs, or designing personalized touch-menu buttons for your studio management software.

What should I do if my generated icons look blurry or pixelated?

Blurry or pixelated icons almost always come from a source image with too little resolution. Start with a square image of at least 1024 by 1024 pixels, the size of the largest icon. If your image is smaller than that, the tool has to enlarge it for the bigger sizes, which softens them. Also check the framing: the tool always uses the center square of your image, so a wide photo loses its sides. Crop it to a square around your subject first if the subject is off-center.

How does this tool compare to standard image resizing utilities?

A standard resizer scales an image to one size at a time: you enter a width and height, export, and repeat for every size you need. This tool is set up with eleven common iOS and Android icon sizes, so one click produces the whole set, from the 1024 pixel store icon down to the 48 pixel Android mdpi icon. It also crops to a square for you and names each file with its platform and dimensions, which a general resizer does not do.

What file formats are supported for my photography?

You can load JPEG, PNG, WebP and any other image format your browser can display. JPEG is fine for photographs, while PNG is the better choice if your icon design has a transparent background or sharp graphic elements, because the transparency is kept in every generated icon. All icons are saved as PNG files. For the most accurate color, export your source in the sRGB color space, the standard used by phones and computer screens.

Why is the App Icon Generator rejecting my image?

There is no file size limit, because everything runs on your own device, so a rejection almost always comes down to the file type. Files that are not images are ignored, and formats your browser cannot display, such as camera RAW files and layered PSDs, cannot be opened. Export those working files as JPEG or PNG from your editing software first. Very large images can take a moment to read, so wait for the panel with your file's dimensions to appear before clicking Generate App Icons.

How do I ensure my photography looks good when scaled down to a small icon?

Photographs can be challenging to use as icons because complex details get lost at small sizes. To ensure your image remains recognizable, choose a photograph with a clear, singular subject and high contrast. Avoid wide-angle shots with cluttered backgrounds. Instead, opt for tightly cropped portraits, distinct silhouettes, or bold macro details. Before loading it, you may want to increase the contrast and sharpness slightly more than you would for a standard print, as this helps define the edges when the image is reduced to a fraction of its original size on a mobile screen.

Are the generated icons compliant with current Apple and Google developer guidelines?

The tool produces the pixel sizes most commonly requested for iPhone, iPad, App Store, Android launcher densities and Google Play, as square PNG files. It does not build Xcode asset catalogs, Android mipmap folders or adaptive icon layers, and it does not round corners or add padding, so you place the files into your project yourself. Platform rules also change over time; for example, store icons may need to be fully opaque, so check the current guidelines before you submit an app.
