Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the Resize to 5×7 Print tool do to my original photos?

It makes a new JPG of each photo sized for a 5 by 7 inch print at 300 pixels per inch: 1500 by 2100 pixels for vertical photos and 2100 by 1500 for horizontal ones. Most cameras shoot 3:2 or 4:3, which does not match 5:7, so you choose whether to crop the edges evenly from the center or keep the whole photo with white borders. Your originals are never changed.

How do I prepare a landscape orientation photo for a standard 5x7 print?

Click the upload area or drag your horizontal photo onto it. The tool detects the orientation by itself and produces a 2100 by 1500 pixel file. Choose Crop to Fill (Frameless) to fill the print, which trims a little from the left and right edges evenly, or Fit (White Borders) to keep everything. Set the quality slider and click Resize to 5x7. If the crop needs to be off-center, crop to 7:5 in your editor first.

Why should I use the Resize to 5×7 Print tool instead of cropping in my print lab's software?

Lab software often crops automatically, and you may not see what was cut, such as a subject's hair or hands, until the prints arrive. Preparing the files yourself means each one is already the exact 5:7 shape, so the lab has nothing left to trim. Use Fit when nothing can be lost, or Crop to Fill for a frameless print, and for an off-center subject, crop it in your editor first.

When is the best time in my editing workflow to resize images for print?

Resize for a specific print size at the very end of your post-production workflow. First, complete color correction, exposure, retouching and sharpening on the full-resolution original. Once the master edit is final, export it and create the 5x7 version with this tool. Your master stays uncropped and ready for other sizes, while you get a dedicated file sized exactly for a 5x7 frame.

How does a 5x7 aspect ratio compare to a standard full-frame camera sensor?

Full-frame and APS-C sensors capture a 3:2 aspect ratio, or 1.5 to 1. A 5x7 print is 1.4 to 1, slightly less wide and closer to square. So when you crop a 3:2 photo to fill a 5x7, a small strip is lost from the long edges. Many professional photographers frame a little wider in camera to leave room for common print crops like 5x7 and 8x10.

Why does my image look pixelated after cropping to a 5x7 size?

Pixelation usually means the original lacked the resolution for a quality print. A 5x7 print at 300 pixels per inch needs 1500 by 2100 pixels, and the tool enlarges anything smaller to fill that size. A small file, such as an image saved from social media or a thumbnail, will look soft when stretched. Always use your highest resolution original JPG or export when preparing photos for print.

Will resizing my photo change the original file stored on my computer?

No. The tool reads a copy of your photo in your browser and never writes back to the original. When you click Resize to 5x7, it creates a brand new JPG named 5x7_Print_ plus your file name and downloads it. Your original stays untouched in its folder, so you can return to the uncropped version later to print it at a different size.

How do I ensure my portrait photos fit perfectly in a vertical 5x7 frame?

Add your vertical portraits and the tool makes each a 1500 by 2100 pixel file automatically. A 3:2 vertical portrait loses a little from the top and bottom with Crop to Fill, trimmed evenly. If your framing is tight around the head, that can clip the hair or chin, so either use Fit (White Borders) or crop to 5:7 in your editor first, balancing the headroom yourself, before resizing.

What should I do if the Resize to 5×7 Print tool cuts off my subject's feet?

If Crop to Fill trims important details like a subject's feet, the photo was framed too tightly for the 5:7 shape. You have two options. Switch to Fit (White Borders), which keeps the entire photo on a 5x7 canvas and adds white along the short edges. Or choose a print size that matches your camera, such as 4x6, which is exactly 3:2 and needs no cropping.

Why do professional photographers still offer 5x7 prints to their clients?

5x7 prints remain a staple of professional packages because they suit tabletop displays, desk frames and small wall collages. They have noticeably more presence than 4x6 snapshots without needing the wall space or framing cost of an 8x10 or 11x14. Standard 5x7 frames are sold almost everywhere, so properly sized files make it easy for clients to display family portraits and wedding photos.
