Photo Film Grain Tool

Digital files can feel too clean for a film-inspired edit. The Photo Film Grain Tool adds monochrome grain across your image, with a Grain Intensity slider that ranges from subtle texture to heavy, gritty noise. It is a quick way for photographers to give portraits, street and black and white work an analog finish before export.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Photo Film Grain Tool create grain?

It adds random noise to every pixel. The same random value is applied to the red, green and blue channels of each pixel, so the grain is monochrome luminance noise rather than colored speckles, which is closer to the look of film. Grain Intensity sets the strength: at 100 percent each pixel can shift up to 50 levels brighter or darker. Because the noise is random, every application is unique.

How do I add film grain to a photo?

Click the area that reads Click or Drag Image to Start and select a photo. Set Grain Intensity, which defaults to 50 percent, and click Apply Film Grain. A Download Grained Photo button then appears; click it to save the result as a JPEG named grained-photo.jpg. To try another strength, move the slider and click Apply Film Grain again, as each run starts from your original image.

How much grain should I add?

For color portraits and weddings, 10 to 25 percent adds texture without drawing attention. Black and white street and documentary images often carry more, around 30 to 50 percent. Higher settings suit stylized or high-ISO film looks. Grain is applied per pixel, so it appears finer on a high-resolution file and coarser on a small one; judge it at the size the image will be viewed.

Which formats work, and what quality is the download?

The tool accepts any image your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG and WebP. The output keeps the original pixel dimensions and is saved as a JPEG at high quality. Grain is fine, high-frequency detail, so heavy compression later in your workflow can soften it. Apply grain as the last step and avoid resizing the file afterward, which would also change its character.

Should I add grain before or after editing?

After. Finish exposure, color, retouching and sharpening first, then add grain as the final touch. Noise reduction or sharpening applied on top of grain will either smear it or exaggerate it. Grain is also useful for breaking up banding in smooth skies and backdrops, and for helping heavily retouched areas blend with the untouched texture in the rest of the frame.

Is the Photo Film Grain Tool really free, and what happens to my photo?

The tool is free, and privacy is built into how it works: your photo is read and processed locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and the file stays on your device. Results come without a watermark, and there is no software to install. To use it, answer once that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which also unlocks every other free tool.
