Frequently asked questions

What is a JPG to ICO Converter and why would a photographer need it?

ICO is the icon format used for website favicons and Windows desktop icons. Photographers often need one when building a portfolio site or branding the folders they deliver to clients. This converter takes a JPG, such as your logo or a monogram, and turns it into an ICO file at the size you pick, so your branding appears in browser tabs and on desktops without design software.

How do I use the JPG to ICO Converter to create a website favicon?

Pick a clear, simple image, ideally your logo or a bold monogram cropped square. Drop the JPG onto the tool or click to choose it. Under Select ICO Size choose 32 x 32, the usual favicon size, then click Convert to ICO; the .ico file downloads automatically. Place it in your website's root folder as favicon.ico, or add it through your website builder's branding or site icon settings.

Why should I convert my JPG to ICO instead of just using a PNG for my icons?

Modern browsers accept PNG favicons, but ICO remains the long-standing default: many browsers and tools still look for a favicon.ico file at the root of a site, and Windows uses ICO for desktop and folder icons. Each file this tool creates holds one image at the size you choose, stored as a 32-bit PNG inside the ICO. For several sizes, convert the image once per size.

When is the best time in my photography workflow to use the JPG to ICO Converter?

The natural moment is during branding and website work. Once your logo is final and exported as a high-quality JPG, convert a version to ICO so all your brand assets are ready before you launch or update your portfolio. You might also use it when delivering files to commercial clients, giving their gallery folders a custom icon. It is a small detail that makes a delivery feel more polished.

Why does my converted ICO file look blurry or pixelated?

Icons are tiny, often viewed at 16 or 32 pixels, and detailed photos or logos with thin text do not survive that reduction well. The tool scales your image to fit the chosen square without stretching it, so a rectangular JPG becomes a smaller image centered with transparent margins. For a sharper result, crop the JPG to a square first, choose a bolder, simpler design, and pick a larger icon size where it is supported.

What is the difference between converting a JPG versus a RAW file to an ICO?

Raw files hold unprocessed sensor data and cannot be turned into icons directly; this tool accepts JPG files only. Process the raw file in your editing software first: apply your color, crop it square and export it as a JPG. Then add that JPG to the converter and choose the icon size you need. Starting from a carefully cropped, simple export gives the cleanest small icon.

Does the conversion process alter the original colors of my photograph?

The colors are kept as they are. The tool stores the icon as a 32-bit image, 24-bit true color plus an 8-bit transparency channel, so there is no reduced palette. The image is, however, scaled down to the icon size you choose, which averages neighboring pixels and softens fine detail. Viewing a picture at 16 x 16 pixels also changes how colors are perceived, so test it in place.

How do I make the background of my ICO transparent if my original file is a JPG?

JPG does not support transparency, so whatever background your image has, white, black or a color, stays solid in the icon. The only transparent parts the tool adds are the margins around a non-square image, which it fits inside the square. For a logo that sits cleanly on any browser tab color, crop it square and give it a background that matches your brand or your site's header.

What are the file size limitations for images in the converter?

The tool sets no fixed limit. Your JPG is opened in your browser on your own device, so a full-resolution camera file works, although a very large one takes a moment to decode. Since every icon is at most 256 x 256 pixels, there is no benefit in starting from a huge photo. Cropping and resizing it to about 512 pixels first lets you check the design before converting.

Is the generated ICO file suitable for Apple devices, or do I need a different format?

ICO is the standard for Windows and for desktop browser favicons, and Safari on macOS can use a favicon.ico in browser tabs. iPhones and iPads work differently: when someone saves your site to their home screen, iOS looks for an Apple Touch Icon, a larger PNG image declared in your site's code. Web developers usually supply both, an ICO for browsers and a PNG for Apple devices.
