Frequently asked questions
What does the Tone Mapping Tool do?
It adjusts the overall tone and exposure of a photo with a single control. The Exposure / Tone Intensity slider scales the brightness of every pixel: values below 1.0 darken the image and values above 1.0 brighten it. The adjusted photo downloads as a PNG at its original resolution, giving you a quick way to rebalance an image without opening an editor.
How do I use the Tone Mapping Tool?
Click to upload or drag and drop a JPG or PNG. Once the photo is loaded, the Exposure / Tone Intensity slider appears at 1.0, which leaves the image unchanged. Move it between 0.5 and 2.0 in steps of 0.1; the current value shows below it. Click Apply & Download and the adjusted image saves as toned-image.png.
What values should I use?
Small moves go a long way. A setting of 1.1 to 1.3 lifts an underexposed photo, while 0.8 to 0.9 tames a bright one. At 2.0 the image is doubled in brightness, and at 0.5 it is halved. Brightening multiplies every pixel, so bright areas reach pure white first; if skies or white dresses lose detail, use a lower value.
Is this the same as HDR tone mapping?
No. HDR tone mapping compresses a very wide dynamic range by treating shadows and highlights differently across the frame. This tool applies one global adjustment to every pixel equally, so it changes overall brightness rather than recovering shadow and highlight detail separately. It works best on images that are evenly lit but simply too dark or too bright.
What file format does the Tone Mapping Tool save?
The result is always saved as a PNG, which is lossless, so your adjustment is not followed by extra compression. The image keeps the same pixel dimensions as the original. PNG files are larger than JPGs, so convert the result to JPG afterward if you need a lighter file for web galleries, email, or social media.
Is the Tone Mapping Tool free, and are my photos uploaded?
It is free, adds no watermark, and your photos are never uploaded. The adjustment runs in your browser on your own device, with nothing to install. The first time, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log in to a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool on the site.
