Sony SR2 to JPG

Sony SR2 to JPG turns raw files from older Sony cameras into JPG images you can share or open anywhere. It extracts the largest JPEG preview the camera embedded in each SR2 file and saves it at the quality you set, from 10 to 100. Photographers can convert a whole folder of archive files in one pass, in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sony SR2 to JPG converter tool?

It is a free browser tool that turns Sony SR2 raw files into JPG images. SR2 is a raw format used by some earlier Sony cameras, and many current apps no longer open it. Each SR2 file contains the camera's own JPEG rendering of the shot as a preview. The tool finds the largest preview, decodes it, and saves it as a JPG at the quality you choose. It does not develop the raw sensor data, so the size depends on the preview the camera stored.

How do I convert my raw images using this tool?

Drop your SR2 files onto the upload area or click it to browse. The file picker also accepts Sony ARW files. Each file appears in a list marked Ready, and a JPG Output Quality slider appears. Set the quality between 10 and 100; it starts at 90. Click Convert to JPG and each file is processed in turn, with its status shown beside it, and your browser downloads a .jpg with the original file name. Clear All empties the list.

Why should I use a dedicated Sony SR2 to JPG converter instead of general software?

Mostly for speed and access. Many image viewers and newer editors cannot open SR2 files at all, and installing raw software just to look at an old shoot is a lot of effort. This tool needs nothing installed and gives you shareable JPGs of the camera's own rendering in seconds. If you want to rework exposure, white balance or color from the raw data itself, a full raw developer is still the right tool, because this converter uses the embedded preview.

When is the best time to convert my raw files to JPG?

Convert when you need a viewable or shareable copy of SR2 files rather than a fully developed edit: browsing an old archive, sending proofs or references to a client, posting a few frames online, or moving pictures to a device that cannot read raw files. For portfolio work or prints, develop the raw file in an editor first, because the JPG here reflects the camera's preview. Either way, keep the SR2 originals, since they hold the full sensor data.

How does the SR2 format differ from the standard JPG format?

An SR2 file is a raw capture: it stores the unprocessed sensor readings plus a JPEG preview, and it needs raw software to be developed into a full image. A JPG is a finished 8-bit picture with the camera or editor's choices already applied, compressed to keep files small, and readable by almost every device and website. SR2 gives you editing latitude; JPG gives you compatibility. This tool bridges the two by saving the SR2's embedded preview as a standard JPG.

What should I do if my converted JPG files appear too dark or incorrectly colored?

The JPG shows the camera's own rendering, made with the white balance, contrast and picture settings that were active when you took the shot. If the photo was underexposed or the white balance was off in camera, the preview carries that too, and it can differ from how a raw editor displays the same file with its own defaults. For brightness or color corrections, edit the JPG in any photo editor, or develop the SR2 raw file for the most latitude.

Does the Sony SR2 to JPG tool support batch processing for multiple files?

Yes. Select or drop as many SR2 files as you like, and add more before converting. One quality setting applies to the whole batch. When you click Convert to JPG, the files are processed one after another and each downloads as its own JPG, so your browser may ask once for permission to download multiple files. A file with no readable preview is marked No Preview Found and the rest of the batch carries on.

Is there any loss of image quality during the conversion process?

A little, and you control how much. The source is the camera's embedded JPEG preview, so the resolution is whatever the camera stored, and the tool re-encodes it as a new JPG at the quality you set. At the default of 90 the difference is hard to see; lower settings make smaller files with more visible compression. The conversion does not recover detail from the raw sensor data, so for the best possible quality develop the SR2 in a raw editor.

Are my photographs kept secure and private when using this online tool?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser on your own device. Your SR2 files are read locally, the preview is decoded and re-encoded locally, and the JPG is saved straight to your downloads folder. The photos are never sent anywhere, which matters when you are working with client images or unreleased work. Your original files are only read, never changed, and closing the tab clears everything the page loaded.

Can I use this converter on my mobile device or tablet?

It runs in any modern browser, including on phones and tablets, as long as you can reach the SR2 files through the device's file picker, for example from a files app or a connected card reader. Raw files are large, so converting many at once on a phone can be slow, and mobile browsers handle multiple downloads differently from desktop ones. For big archive batches, a desktop or laptop browser is the more comfortable choice.
