Convert Sony ARW to JPG

Convert Sony ARW to JPG saves the JPEG preview your Sony camera stores inside each ARW raw file. Keep it untouched at 100, or pick a lower quality for smaller files. Photographers get quick, shareable copies for proofs, client previews and social posts, though many Sony previews are smaller than the full sensor resolution.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Sony ARW file and why should I convert it?

An ARW file is the raw image format used by Sony digital cameras. It holds unprocessed sensor data, which gives you the most flexibility in editing, but ARW files are large and are not supported by web browsers, social platforms or most image viewers. Inside each ARW the camera also stores a JPEG preview of the shot. This tool saves that preview as a JPG, giving you a small, universally readable copy for quick sharing or viewing while the ARW stays your original for editing.

How do I use the tool to Convert Sony ARW to JPG?

Drag your files onto the area marked Drop your ARW files here, or click it to browse. Only files ending in .arw are accepted. An Output Quality slider appears, running from 50 to 100 and set to 100, along with your file list and the Clear All and Convert to JPG buttons. Press Convert to JPG and the tool works through the list one file at a time. Each JPG downloads automatically, named after the original, so DSC01234.ARW becomes DSC01234.jpg.

What is the difference in file size between ARW and JPG formats?

The difference is large. An ARW file stores the full sensor data, and its size depends on your camera's resolution and whether you shoot compressed or uncompressed raw. The JPG from this tool is the preview the camera embedded in that file, which is far smaller, both because JPEG uses lossy compression and because the preview on many Sony models has fewer pixels than the sensor. Setting the quality slider below 100 makes the JPG smaller still. Small files are quicker to email, share and store.

Does converting an ARW file to a JPEG reduce the image quality?

Compared with the raw data, yes. The JPG is an 8-bit image with the camera's processing already applied, so you lose the latitude to recover highlights and shadows that the 12-bit or 14-bit ARW offers. On many Sony models the preview is also smaller than the full sensor resolution, around 1616 by 1080 pixels. At a quality of 100 the tool saves the preview exactly as the camera wrote it; below 100 it re-compresses it, trading some detail for a smaller file. For prints and final delivery, export from your raw editor.

When is the best time to Convert Sony ARW to JPG during my workflow?

Use this tool when you need viewable copies quickly, before or without a full edit: proofs right after a shoot, a quick selection for a client, a preview for social media, or checking files on a computer that has no raw software. The JPG is the preview the camera rendered at capture, so it does not include any adjustments you make later in a raw editor. When your edits are final, export the delivery images from your editing software and keep the ARW files as your originals.

Why are my converted JPEG files looking flat or lacking contrast?

The JPG from this tool is the camera's own preview, so it carries the picture settings you used when shooting. If you shot with a flat profile, such as an S-Log or other log picture profile, or with contrast and saturation turned down, the preview is flat too, and so is the JPG. With standard settings it should look much like the image on your camera's screen. If you want a different look, edit the ARW in a raw editor and export the JPG from there.

Can I process multiple files at once with this conversion tool?

Yes. Select several ARW files in the file picker or drag them onto the drop area together, and add more before converting if you need to. When you press Convert to JPG, the tool processes them one after another using the same quality setting, and each JPG downloads separately as soon as it is ready. There is no ZIP archive, so allow multiple downloads if your browser asks. Files already marked Done are skipped if you press the button again.

Will my EXIF metadata be preserved after the conversion?

Not from the ARW itself. At a quality of 100 the JPG is the embedded preview exactly as the camera wrote it, so it keeps whatever metadata the camera put into that preview, which is often little. The tool does not copy the ARW's EXIF data, such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO, into it. At 100 the orientation is not applied either, so vertical shots can open sideways. Below 100 the image is redrawn upright and re-compressed, and that copy carries no metadata at all.

What should I do if the tool fails to Convert Sony ARW to JPG?

First check the file name: only files ending in .arw are accepted. If a file's status changes to Error, the tool could not find an embedded JPEG preview that a browser can decode, which usually means the file is damaged or incomplete. Try opening it in a raw viewer to confirm it is intact, and copy it from the memory card again if needed. Very large batches use a lot of memory, so converting fewer files at a time or trying another up-to-date browser can also help.

Should I convert my Sony raw files to JPEG or TIFF?

It depends on what you will do with the file. JPEG is the best choice for the web, social media and delivering galleries to clients, because the files are small and open everywhere. TIFF is a lossless format that supports 16-bit color, so it suits further heavy editing, compositing or high-end printing where maximum quality matters. This tool saves JPG only, from the preview stored in the ARW. For a full-resolution TIFF, export one from your raw editor, where the full sensor data is available.
