Rotate Photo 180°

The Rotate Photo 180° tool turns upside-down photos the right way up in your browser. Add one or more images, click Rotate 180°, and each downloads as a new file in its original format where the browser can write it, otherwise PNG. It suits photographers fixing flat lays, overhead shots and scans that came out inverted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Rotate Photo 180° tool?

The Rotate Photo 180° tool is a free browser utility that turns images upside down, which is how you fix a photo that was saved inverted. It works with JPG, PNG and WebP and other formats your browser can display, and keeps the full resolution. Each rotated image is saved as a new file in the same format where the browser can write it, so a JPG stays a JPG, and nothing needs to be installed.

When should a photographer use the Rotate Photo 180° feature?

Use it when a camera's orientation sensor records an image upside down. This often happens when shooting straight down at a flat lay or straight up at a ceiling, where the camera cannot tell which way is up. It is also handy for scans of prints or film placed upside down on the scanner bed. Rotating 180 degrees fixes the orientation before you import the files into your editing workflow or deliver them to clients.

How do I rotate my images using this tool?

Drop your photos onto the upload area, or click it to browse; you can add several at once. Each appears in the list with the action Rotate 180°. Click Rotate 180°, and every photo is turned and downloaded as a new file named rotated_180_ plus the original name. If a file cannot be opened, its status says Can't read this file. Use Clear to empty the list.

How does a 180-degree rotation differ from flipping an image?

Rotating an image 180 degrees turns the whole picture upside down around its center. The result is the same as flipping it horizontally and then vertically. A single horizontal flip, by contrast, makes a mirror image, swapping left and right, which changes the scene itself. A 180-degree rotation only changes which way up you view it, so text still reads correctly once the photo is the right way up, whereas a mirrored photo shows text backwards.

Why did my image lose quality after rotation?

The tool redraws your photo and saves it again, so it is not a lossless rotation. PNG files are saved losslessly. JPG and WebP files are re-encoded at the highest quality setting, which is visually very close to the original but is a new round of compression. Rotating the same file repeatedly adds up, so rotate from the original once. Formats the browser cannot write, such as AVIF or HEIC, are saved as PNG.

Why does my camera sometimes save photos upside down?

Cameras use an internal orientation sensor to decide which way up you are holding them when the shutter fires. When you point the camera straight down at a document or straight up at architecture, gravity gives no clear vertical reference, and the sensor can record the wrong orientation in the image's EXIF data. Software that reads that tag then shows the photo upside down, so a manual 180-degree rotation is needed.

Are my photographs stored anywhere after I rotate them?

No. The tool rotates your files entirely within your web browser, on your own device. When you click Rotate 180°, the rotation is applied in the browser's memory and the result is saved straight to your downloads. Because nothing is sent anywhere, there is nothing to delete afterwards, and your photographs are never analyzed or used for any other purpose, which keeps client work confidential.

Can I rotate multiple photos at the same time?

Yes. Select several photos at once or drop a group onto the upload area, and they all join the list. When you click Rotate 180°, each one is rotated in turn and downloads as its own file. That makes it quick to fix a run of overhead shots from one session. To start a new set, click Clear and add the next batch.

Which file formats are supported by the Rotate Photo 180° tool?

The tool opens any image your browser can display, including JPG, PNG and WebP. It saves each result in the same format when the browser can write that format, and as PNG otherwise, with the file extension changed to match. Raw formats such as CR2, NEF, ARW or DNG cannot be opened in a browser, so rotate those in your raw conversion software before exporting. Note that the new file carries no EXIF data or color profile.

Does this rotation tool work on mobile devices and tablets?

Yes. It runs in modern mobile browsers on iOS and Android, so there is nothing to install. That is useful on location, when you want to fix an upside-down image before posting a sneak peek or sending a quick proof to a client. Select the photo from your camera roll or files, tap Rotate 180°, and the rotated copy is saved to your device.
