Frequently asked questions

What is a PBM file?

PBM, short for Portable Bitmap, is one of the Netpbm image formats. It stores a strictly black and white image, where every pixel is either on or off, in a very simple structure: a short header with the width and height, followed by the pixel values. It is common in scanning, document processing, and scientific or scripting workflows, but most photo viewers and websites cannot display it.

How do I convert PBM files to JPG?

Click the file area at the top of the tool and choose one or more .pbm files. Each file is listed as Ready. Click Convert to JPG and the files are converted in order, with each status changing to Processing and then Done. Every JPG downloads automatically with the original file name and a .jpg extension, so it is easy to match to its source. Choosing files again replaces the list rather than adding to it.

Which PBM variants are supported?

Both. The converter reads plain PBM, identified by P1 at the start of the file, where each pixel is written as the digit 1 for black or 0 for white, with or without spaces between digits and with comment lines allowed. It also reads binary PBM, identified by P4, where pixels are packed eight to a byte, row by row. It takes the width and height from the header and rebuilds the image at exactly that size.

What quality is the JPG output?

Each image is saved as a JPG at 90 percent quality, at exactly the pixel dimensions given in the PBM header. Black pixels start as pure black and white pixels as pure white, though JPG compression can add slight softness and faint artifacts along hard edges. If you need perfectly crisp edges for line art or documents, keep the original PBM or use a lossless format such as PNG.

Why would a photographer need to convert PBM files?

PBM files often turn up as masks, threshold images, or test outputs from scripts and image processing tools, and in scans of documents such as signed releases or contracts. Converting them to JPG makes them easy to preview, email, drop into a client gallery, or place in a layout, without installing specialist software on every machine that needs to open them.

Is the PBM to JPG Converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark, and needs no software installation. Your files are converted on your own device inside the browser and never leave it. If a file cannot be read, its status shows the reason, such as Unsupported PBM type or Invalid PBM header. To unlock the tools, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free account once, and every tool is available after that.
