Nikon NEF to PNG
The Nikon NEF to PNG converter turns Nikon raw files into lossless PNG images that open anywhere. It extracts the JPEG preview your camera stored inside each NEF, full size on most Nikon models, applies the correct rotation and saves it as a PNG. Photographers use it for quick proofs and previews without raw software, all in the browser.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Nikon NEF to PNG converter and how does it work?
It is a free browser tool for NEF, Nikon Electronic Format, the raw files from Nikon's interchangeable lens cameras, which many photo viewers and browsers cannot open. Besides the sensor data, each NEF holds a JPEG preview rendered by the camera. The tool finds the largest one, rotates it according to the file's orientation and saves it as a PNG, ready to view or share without editing software.
Why should I convert my Nikon NEF files to PNG instead of JPEG?
PNG is lossless, so saving the extracted preview adds no further compression artifacts, which helps if the image will be edited, annotated or used in a layout. JPEG gives much smaller files and is better for quick sharing. Keep in mind that the preview inside the NEF is itself a JPEG, so PNG preserves it exactly rather than adding quality, and PNG files are considerably larger.
How do I use the Nikon NEF to PNG tool on my mobile device?
The tool runs in your mobile browser just as on a computer. Copy the NEF files from your camera to your phone or tablet, open the tool, tap the drop area and pick the files. Tap Convert to PNG; each file shows Extracting and then Done, and the PNGs save to your device. Everything happens on the device itself, so large files take a moment and use some memory.
When is the best time in my photography workflow to convert NEF to PNG?
Use it when you need a viewable copy quickly: sharing proofs straight after a shoot, checking frames on a computer without raw software, or dropping a reference image into a layout. Because it uses the camera's preview, it does not include your edits. For final deliverables, finish your adjustments in your raw editor and export from there.
Why are the colors in my converted PNG different from what I saw on my camera screen?
They should look very close. Your camera screen shows its own JPEG rendering with your Picture Control, contrast and saturation settings, and the tool extracts that same embedded preview. Small differences usually come from the screens themselves. A raw editor, by contrast, develops the sensor data its own way, so if you compare against one, the PNG may look more or less saturated.
How does this tool compare to processing NEF files in professional desktop software?
Desktop raw software develops the sensor data and gives full control over white balance, exposure, noise reduction and lens corrections. This tool does none of that. It takes the camera's own preview and saves it as a PNG in seconds, with nothing to install. That makes it useful away from your main workstation, on a device that cannot open NEF, or when you need to share a frame immediately.
Does the Nikon NEF to PNG converter strip EXIF metadata during the process?
Yes. The PNG is created from the embedded preview image alone, so shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, camera model and Nikon's maker notes are not copied into it. The tool reads only the orientation, to rotate the image correctly. If you need the complete shooting data for archiving or copyright registration, keep the original NEF alongside the PNG.
What should I do if my NEF file fails to convert?
If a file shows No preview image found, it holds no JPEG preview your browser can decode, and the tool cannot develop the raw data instead. If the preview could not be decoded, the file may have been damaged when copied from the card; check it opens in another program and copy it again. Make sure the extension is .nef. Very large files need some memory, so close other tabs if needed.
Can I convert multiple Nikon raw files to PNG at the same time?
Yes. Select multiple NEF files or drag them onto the drop area together, and add more whenever you need. The tool processes them one after another in your browser, on your own device, and each PNG downloads automatically as soon as it is ready. Allow multiple downloads if your browser asks, and click Clear Files to start a new batch.
Why are the resulting PNG files so much larger than my original NEF files?
A PNG of a photograph is often large. It stores full red, green and blue values for every pixel with lossless compression, which cannot shrink photographic detail as much as the JPEG compression of the preview inside the NEF. When the camera's preview is full size, the PNG can therefore approach or exceed the size of the raw file. Use JPG instead when file size matters.
