Convert Nikon NEF to JPG
This free converter turns Nikon NEF raw files into JPGs in your browser. It extracts the largest JPEG preview your camera stored inside each NEF, turns it upright and saves it at the quality you choose, so photographers can share proofs, post previews or check a shoot without opening a raw editor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the primary benefit when I Convert Nikon NEF to JPG using this tool?
You get a JPG that opens anywhere, quickly. NEF files hold the camera's sensor data and are hard to view or share without raw software. This tool finds the largest JPEG preview your Nikon embedded in each NEF, the camera's own rendering of the shot, turns it upright and saves it at the quality you set. The result is far smaller than the NEF, ready for client proofs, social media or a quick review, and readable in any browser, operating system or image viewer.
How do I use the Convert Nikon NEF to JPG tool on Imagen AI?
Drag your NEF files onto the area labeled Click or Drag Nikon NEF files here, or click it and select several at once. Files with other extensions are skipped with a message. Each file appears in the list with its size and a Ready status, and the JPG Output Quality slider appears, starting at 90 percent. Press Convert to JPG and the files are processed one after another, each JPG downloading as soon as it is ready with the NEF's name. Clear List empties the list.
Why do NEF files look different from the converted JPG images?
The JPG this tool saves is the preview your Nikon rendered at capture, the same kind of image you see on the camera's screen, with your Picture Control, white balance and contrast applied. So it usually matches the camera, but it can look different from the NEF opened in a raw editor, which builds its own rendering from the sensor data with its own default profile. Both are interpretations of the same data; for your own look, edit the NEF and export from your raw software.
When should a photographer Convert Nikon NEF to JPG instead of keeping the raw files?
Convert when you need to share, publish or quickly review your work. Raw files are essential during editing and retouching because they keep maximum dynamic range and color information for highlight and shadow recovery. But NEF files are large and open in few applications, so they are impractical for sending proofs or posting. This tool is the quickest way to get proofs for client selection. For final delivery, edit the NEF in your raw software and export the finished JPGs from there.
What should I do if my converted JPG files have incorrect white balance?
Because the tool saves the camera's own embedded preview, the white balance is whatever your Nikon applied at capture; the tool does not interpret or change it. If the JPG shows a color cast, the camera's white balance setting was off for that light, for example auto white balance under mixed or artificial lighting. To fix it, open the NEF in a raw editor, set the temperature or use a white balance picker, and export from there. Setting a custom white balance in camera helps on future shoots.
How does a converted JPG compare to a TIFF file?
Both JPG and TIFF are standard image formats, but they serve different purposes in a photography workflow. A JPG is a compressed format that discards some visual data to achieve a much smaller file size, making it ideal for web use, email and general viewing, and it is the format this tool produces. A TIFF is typically uncompressed or uses lossless compression, so it keeps all the image quality and detail. TIFF files are much larger and are mainly used for high-end printing, archiving, or handing an image to another professional for further retouching without degrading it.
Does converting my Nikon raw file to JPG permanently alter the original image?
No, the conversion is completely non-destructive. The tool only reads your NEF file in your browser and creates an entirely new JPG, which downloads separately. Your original raw file stays exactly as your camera captured it, with all of its sensor data intact, and it never leaves your device. You can safely save the new JPG without any risk of overwriting your source file. It is still wise to keep a secure backup of your original raw files for future editing and archiving.
Why is the conversion process taking longer than expected for my NEF files?
Nothing is uploaded, so your internet speed plays no part; the time is spent on your own device. Modern high-resolution Nikon bodies produce NEF files of tens of megabytes, and the tool reads each whole file to find the embedded preview, decodes it and encodes a new JPG. Files are handled one at a time, so a long list takes a while, especially on an older computer or phone. If a file shows Failed, it may be damaged or carry no readable preview.
Is there a difference in quality when I convert NEF to JPG compared to shooting in JPEG directly?
With this tool, the difference is small, because the JPG it saves is the camera's own rendering of the shot, the preview your Nikon embedded in the NEF, re-encoded at the quality you set. The real advantage of shooting NEF is what you keep: the full dynamic range and color depth of the sensor data, which a raw editor can use to recover highlights, lift shadows and correct white balance far beyond what a JPEG allows. Shooting JPEG alone discards that data at capture.
Can I batch process multiple images at once with this tool?
Yes. You can select or drop many NEF files at once and keep adding more before converting. Press Convert to JPG and the tool processes the list one file at a time, downloading each JPG as soon as it is ready, so there is no ZIP archive to unpack. Your browser may ask permission the first time a page downloads several files. This suits event and wedding photographers who need quick proofs for client review, and the tool is free to use with a free Imagen account.
