Frequently asked questions

What is the Minolta MRW to JPG converter tool?

It is a free tool for photographers with files from Minolta and Konica Minolta digital cameras. MRW is the proprietary raw format those cameras used, and many current operating systems and photo viewers do not open it. Rather than developing the raw sensor data, the tool extracts the JPEG preview each camera stored in the file and saves it as a JPG you can view, share and print anywhere.

How do I convert my Minolta MRW to JPG using this tool?

Drag your MRW files onto the drop area, or click it to choose them; you can add several at once. Set the JPG Output Quality slider, which starts at 92, then click Convert to JPG. The files are processed one at a time, each showing Extracting and then Done, and every JPG downloads automatically with the original name. Click Clear All to start over.

Why should I convert my old MRW files to JPG format?

MRW is a discontinued raw format, and fewer applications support it every year. JPG copies open on virtually any phone, tablet or computer without special software. They are also much smaller, which makes them easy to email to clients, post to an online portfolio or share with family. Keep the original MRW files as well, since they hold the full sensor data.

How does a converted JPG compare to the original MRW raw file?

The MRW file holds the unprocessed sensor data, with full freedom to adjust white balance, exposure and color. The JPG from this tool is the camera's own preview rendering, with its white balance and color fixed, at 8 bits per channel and at the resolution the camera stored the preview. It opens anywhere, so keep the MRW for archival editing and use the JPG for viewing, proofs and sharing.

Why are my converted JPG images looking slightly different in color than I remember?

The JPG is the preview your camera rendered at the time, close to what you saw on its screen. If you remember the images from Minolta's own software or another raw processor, they may look different, because those programs develop the sensor data their own way. This tool does not re-interpret the raw data. For precise color, edit the MRW in a raw processor or adjust the JPG afterwards.

When is the best time to use the Minolta MRW to JPG tool?

Whenever you need quick access to older Minolta photos without loading heavy editing software: auditing old drives to see what an MRW archive holds, or answering a client or relative who asks for copies they can open on their own devices. A batch of JPGs in a few minutes is far quicker than setting up a raw processor that still supports the format.

Does this converter preserve the original EXIF metadata during the process?

No. The JPG is created fresh from the embedded preview, so EXIF details such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length and the capture date are not copied into it. The tool reads only the orientation, to rotate the image correctly. Keep your MRW originals if you need the shooting data for cataloging, or add key details in your photo software.

Can I process multiple MRW files at the same time?

Yes. Select a whole group of MRW files, or drag them onto the drop area together, and add more whenever you need. When you click Convert to JPG, the tool works through the list one file at a time and downloads each JPG as it finishes, skipping any already converted. Allow multiple downloads if your browser asks. It suits organizing entire folders of older shoots.

What should I do if an MRW file fails to convert?

If a file shows No preview image found, it holds no JPEG preview your browser can decode, and the tool cannot develop the raw data instead. If the preview could not be decoded, the file may be damaged after years on older media; check that it copies to your computer without errors and try another backup. Make sure the extension is .mrw, and try an up-to-date browser.

Are my legacy photographs secure when using this online converter?

Yes. Although the converter runs on a web page, the conversion takes place entirely within your web browser, on your own device. Your MRW files are read locally and the new JPGs are saved straight to your computer, so your photographs never leave your device. Nothing needs to be deleted afterwards, and your images are never used for anything other than the conversion you asked for.
