Frequently asked questions

What is a JPG to PSD Converter and how does it work?

It turns JPEG files into Photoshop Document format, the native working format of Adobe Photoshop. The tool decodes your JPG in your browser and writes its pixels into a PSD file as a single flattened 8-bit RGB image at the same size. Photoshop opens it as one background layer, ready for new layers, adjustment layers, masks and other non-destructive edits on top of the original image.

Why would a photographer need to convert a JPG to a PSD file?

JPGs are excellent for previews and delivery but cannot hold layers. When a JPG from a client, a stock library or your own proofing set needs serious retouching, a PSD gives you a working file. You can add text, composite other elements, mask and use adjustment layers while the original stays intact underneath, then save progress without adding a new round of JPG compression each time.

How do I use the free JPG to PSD Converter provided by Imagen AI?

Drag your JPG files onto the drop area or click it to choose them; you can add several at once. The files appear in a list marked Ready. Click Convert to PSD and each one switches to Processing and then Done as its .psd file downloads automatically with the original name. Click Clear All to start a new set. The files can then be opened in Photoshop or any editor that reads PSD.

What is the difference between using a JPG to PSD Converter versus opening a JPG in Photoshop?

Opening a JPG in Photoshop and saving it as PSD gives a similar result. The converter helps when you have a batch to prepare, since it converts a whole set in one go, or when you are on a computer without Photoshop. It also lets a project manager or client prepare files in the expected format before passing them to a retoucher or designer.

When is the best time in a photography workflow to use a JPG to PSD Converter?

It fits after culling, proofing and basic color work, just before detailed retouching. A typical path is to shoot raw, export JPGs for client proofing, then receive the client's selections. If the next step involves compositing, frequency separation or graphic elements and you only have the JPGs, converting them to PSD at that point means every later edit can be saved on separate layers.

Why is my converted PSD file significantly larger than the original JPG?

That is normal. JPG uses lossy compression to keep files small. The PSD files this tool writes store every pixel uncompressed, three bytes per pixel, so a 24-megapixel photo becomes a PSD of roughly 72 MB. Once you save it from Photoshop with layers and edits, its size will change again. The larger file is the cost of holding the pixels exactly, ready for further work.

Does using a JPG to PSD Converter restore lost quality or create layers from my flat image?

No. Converting cannot restore detail that JPEG compression discarded, and it does not split the flat image into separate layers. The tool places the existing pixels into a PSD as one flattened image, which opens as a single background layer. The benefit is the working format: any edits, text or adjustments you add from then on can live on their own layers.

Can I open the files generated by the JPG to PSD Converter in software other than Adobe Photoshop?

Yes. PSD is Photoshop's native format, but many other image editors and some design apps can open PSD files. Compatibility usually depends on the advanced features a file uses, such as smart objects or layer effects. The files this tool creates contain only a single flat 8-bit RGB image with no extra features, so almost any software that lists PSD support will open them.

What should I do if the JPG to PSD Converter fails to process my image?

Check that the file is a genuine JPG: the tool accepts only JPEG images, and a file of another type renamed to .jpg will not decode. Very large photos need a lot of memory in your browser, so close other tabs or resize the image if a conversion stalls. Refreshing the page or trying a different browser usually clears any remaining problem.

Are my photos safe when I use the JPG to PSD Converter?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser on your own device. Your JPGs are read locally and each PSD is created locally and saved straight to your computer, so neither the originals nor the converted files leave your device. That makes it suitable for sensitive client photos and unpublished commercial work. You keep full ownership of your images, and no watermark is added.
