Frequently asked questions

What is a Pentax PEF file and why do I need to convert it?

A PEF file is the raw image format used by Pentax digital cameras. It holds unprocessed sensor data, which gives you the most room for editing, but PEF files are large and most web browsers, phones, email apps and social platforms cannot open them. Inside each PEF the camera also stores a JPEG preview of the shot. This tool saves that preview as a separate JPG, so you get a small, universally readable copy for sharing or quick viewing, while the PEF stays your original for editing.

How do I use the Convert Pentax PEF to JPG tool on Imagen AI?

Drag your files onto the area marked Drop your PEF files here, or click it to browse. Only files ending in .pef are accepted. A list of your files appears with two buttons, Clear All and Convert to JPG. Press Convert to JPG and the tool works through the list. When a file is finished its status reads Done and a Download JPG button appears next to it; click it to save the JPG, named after the original, so IMGP1234.PEF becomes IMGP1234.jpg.

Why should I convert my files to JPG instead of keeping them as PEF?

You should keep your PEF files either way: they are your digital negatives and hold all the data for editing. A JPG copy is for distribution and viewing. Clients can open it on any device without raw software, and it takes a fraction of the storage of a PEF, which makes it easy to email, post to a web gallery or share on social media. The JPG from this tool shows the camera's own rendering of the shot, with the color and contrast settings you had on the camera.

When is the best time in my photography workflow to convert PEF files?

Use this tool when you need viewable copies quickly, before or without a full edit: proofs straight after a shoot, a quick client selection, a preview for social media, or checking files on a computer that has no raw software. Because the JPG is the preview the camera made at capture, it does not include adjustments you make later in a raw editor. When your edits are final, export the delivery JPGs from your editing software, and keep the PEF files as your originals.

What should I do if my PEF file fails to convert?

First check the file name: the tool only accepts files ending in .pef, and other files are ignored. If a file's status changes to Error / No JPG found, the tool could not find an embedded JPEG preview that a browser can decode, which usually means the file is damaged or was saved without one. Try opening it in a raw viewer to confirm it is intact. Very large batches can use a lot of memory, so converting fewer files at a time or using another up-to-date browser can also help.

Is it safe to use the free Convert Pentax PEF to JPG tool for my client photos?

Yes. The tool processes your PEF files entirely within your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never uploaded, so nobody else sees your client photos, and nothing needs to be deleted afterward. You keep full copyright and ownership of every image, which matters for weddings, private portrait sessions and other confidential work. The converter is free and adds no watermark; using it needs a free Imagen account, created once after you confirm you are a photographer.

Will I lose image quality when converting from PEF to JPG?

The tool adds no extra loss of its own: it saves the embedded JPEG byte for byte, with no re-compression. Compared with the PEF itself, though, the JPG is a different thing. It is an 8-bit JPEG with the camera's processing already applied, so you lose the editing latitude of the raw data, and its pixel size is whatever preview the camera stored, which depends on the model. For client previews, web use and casual sharing that is usually fine; for prints and final delivery, export from your raw editor.

Can I convert multiple Pentax PEF files at the same time?

Yes. Select several PEF files in the file picker or drag them onto the drop area together, and add more at any time. When you press Convert to JPG, the tool processes them one after another, and each finished file gets its own Download JPG button in the list. There is no ZIP archive, so you save each JPG individually. Files that are already converted are skipped if you press the button again, and Clear All empties the list when you want to start over.

Do I need to install any software to Convert Pentax PEF to JPG on Imagen AI?

No installation is required. The tool runs entirely in your web browser, so it works on Windows and macOS computers, and on tablets and phones with a modern browser. There is no raw processing application to download, update or keep compatible with new camera models. That makes it a handy option when you are away from your main editing workstation and need shareable JPGs from your Pentax files, for example to send a client a quick preview from a laptop.

Are my camera settings and metadata preserved during the conversion process?

Only partly. The tool saves the embedded JPEG preview exactly as the camera wrote it, so the JPG keeps whatever metadata the camera put into that preview, which varies by model and may be little or none. It does not copy the EXIF data from the PEF itself, such as shutter speed, aperture or ISO, into the JPG. The orientation recorded in the PEF is not applied either, so a vertical shot can open sideways; rotate it in any viewer if needed.
