Pentax PEF to TIFF

The Pentax PEF to TIFF converter is a free browser tool that takes the full-size JPEG preview your Pentax camera embeds in each PEF raw file, applies the shot's orientation, and saves it as an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF. Photographers use it to hand raw shots to people, labs, and programs that cannot open PEF files.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pentax PEF to TIFF converter used for?

It turns Pentax PEF raw files into TIFF images that almost any viewer, layout program, or print workflow can open. Browsers cannot develop raw sensor data, so the tool uses the JPEG preview the camera stores inside every PEF, the image you saw on the camera's screen. It picks the largest one in the file, rotates it to match the shot's orientation, and writes it out as a baseline, uncompressed RGB TIFF with the original file name.

Why should I convert my Pentax RAW files to TIFF instead of JPEG?

TIFF is lossless, so writing the preview as TIFF adds no further compression on top of the camera's own JPEG. That matters if the image will be retouched and saved several more times, and TIFF is a format many labs and layout programs prefer. Be clear about the limits, though: the TIFF holds the camera's 8-bit rendering, not the raw sensor data, so it does not gain the PEF's dynamic range or color depth.

How do I use the Pentax PEF to TIFF tool?

Drag your PEF files onto the drop area or click it to browse; you can select several at once and add more later. The files appear in a list with their sizes. Click Convert to TIFF and each one is processed in turn, its status moving from Ready to Extracting and then Done, and each TIFF downloads as soon as it is finished. Clear All empties the list. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing has to be sent anywhere first.

How does a PEF file differ from a standard TIFF file?

A PEF file holds the unprocessed sensor data from a Pentax camera, along with camera metadata and JPEG previews, and it needs raw software to develop. A TIFF is a standard, universally readable image made of finished pixels. The TIFFs this tool writes are made from the PEF's embedded preview, so they show the camera's own rendering with its white balance and image settings already applied, ready to open anywhere but without the raw file's editing latitude.

When is the best time in my photography workflow to convert PEF to TIFF?

Use it when someone needs a lossless, viewable file from a raw shot right away and the PEF itself is no use to them: a retoucher doing a first pass, a designer placing an image, or an archive that should hold a readable copy beside each raw. For finished prints and serious editing, develop the PEF in your raw processor and export a 16-bit TIFF from there, since that version will carry your edits and the full tonal range.

Why are my converted TIFF files so much larger than the original PEF files?

The tool writes uncompressed TIFFs, which store three bytes for every pixel with no compression. A 24 megapixel image comes out at roughly 72 MB, while the PEF packs its sensor data and a compact JPEG preview into much less. The extra size is the format, not extra detail, and the tool has no compression option. If space is tight, keep the PEF as your master and convert only the frames you need to share as TIFF.

Is the Pentax PEF to TIFF conversion process destructive to my original files?

No. The converter only reads your PEF file and creates a new TIFF from the preview inside it. Your original raw file is not changed, moved, or renamed, and it stays wherever you keep it. The TIFF downloads as a separate file with the same base name and a .tif extension, so you can convert again at any time and always have the full sensor data to return to.

Does the conversion process retain all the original camera metadata?

No. The TIFF contains the image and the basic tags needed to read it, but none of the EXIF data from the PEF, so shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, camera model, and capture time are not copied across. The orientation is applied to the pixels, so the image still displays upright. If your catalog relies on that metadata, keep the PEF files with the TIFFs or catalog the originals.

Can I convert multiple Pentax RAW files at the same time?

Yes. Select or drop as many PEF files as you need and click Convert to TIFF once. The tool works through the list one file at a time and downloads each TIFF separately as it finishes, so your browser may ask you to allow multiple downloads. There is no ZIP bundle. Large raw files take a moment each, and very big batches use more browser memory, so a modest computer may run more smoothly in groups.

Will the resulting TIFF files work with standard printing services?

Yes, as files. The TIFFs are baseline, uncompressed 8-bit RGB, the plainest form of the format, which print labs, RIP software, and layout programs read without trouble. What prints is the camera's preview rendering at the size the camera stored it, with no color profile embedded. For fine art prints or large enlargements where color and tonal quality matter most, develop the PEF in your raw editor and export a print master from there.
