Frequently asked questions

What exactly does it mean to Convert Panasonic RW2 to JPG?

An RW2 file holds the raw sensor data from a Panasonic Lumix camera, plus a JPEG preview the camera rendered when you took the shot. A web browser cannot develop raw sensor data, so this tool does not process it. Instead it finds the largest JPEG preview stored inside the RW2, draws it upright and saves it as a new JPG at the quality you set. The result looks like the camera's own JPEG, with its Photo Style applied, and opens anywhere. For edits that need the full raw data, keep working from the RW2 in a raw editor.

How do I convert Panasonic RW2 to JPG using this tool?

Click the area marked Click or Drag & Drop RW2 files here, or drag your .rw2 files onto it. Only files ending in .rw2 are accepted. A Conversion Settings panel appears with a JPG quality slider, set to 90 by default, and a list of your files. Press Convert to JPG and the tool works through the list one file at a time. Each JPG downloads as soon as it is ready, named after the original, so P1000123.RW2 becomes P1000123.jpg. Your browser may ask once for permission to download several files.

Why should I shoot in RW2 if I am just going to convert it to JPG later?

Shooting in RW2 captures far more tonal and color information than the camera's JPEG. That extra data lets you recover highlights, lift shadows and correct white balance in a raw editor without the image falling apart. A JPEG from the camera, including the preview stored inside the RW2, has already had those decisions made for it. The practical approach is to keep the RW2 as your master file for editing, and use a quick JPG copy, such as the one this tool extracts, for proofs, previews and sharing before or alongside your full edit.

How does converting an RW2 file to JPG compare to converting to TIFF or PNG?

JPG is a lossy format: it discards a small amount of detail to keep files small, which makes it ideal for email, web galleries and general sharing. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it suits graphics, but photos saved as PNG are much larger. TIFF is a lossless format favored for printing and archiving, with large file sizes to match. This tool saves JPG only. Because its source is the JPEG preview stored in the RW2, saving that preview as TIFF or PNG would not add detail, so JPG is the sensible choice for a quick, shareable copy.

When is the best time in my photography workflow to use this conversion tool?

Use it when you need viewable copies of raw files quickly, before or without a full edit. Typical moments are sending proofs straight after a shoot, letting a client pick favorites, checking files on a computer without raw software, or posting a quick preview. The JPG reflects the camera's own rendering, so it will not include any adjustments you make later in a raw editor. For your final, edited delivery, export the finished images from your editing software instead, and keep the RW2 files as your originals.

Why do my converted JPG files look slightly different in color than the original RW2 files?

Raw data has no fixed look; each program interprets it in its own way. The JPG from this tool is the preview your Lumix camera rendered at the moment of capture, so it carries the camera's Photo Style, white balance and contrast. A raw editor starts from the sensor data and applies its own default profile, which can differ in saturation, contrast and color. Neither is wrong; they are two interpretations. If you prefer the look from your raw editor, export the JPG from there instead of using the embedded preview.

Can I convert Panasonic RW2 to JPG in bulk, or do I have to do it one by one?

You can add several RW2 files at once, by selecting them in the file picker or dragging them onto the drop area together, and you can add more later. When you press Convert to JPG, the tool processes the list one file after another with the same quality setting, and each JPG downloads separately as it finishes. Files already marked Done are skipped if you convert again. There is no ZIP archive, so expect one download per file, and allow multiple downloads if your browser asks.

Are my RW2 files kept anywhere after the conversion?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your RW2 files are read locally and never uploaded, and the JPGs are created and saved straight to your computer, so there is nothing anywhere else to store or delete. That makes the tool suitable for private client work. The converter is free and adds no watermark; access needs a free Imagen account, created once after you confirm you are a photographer, and it unlocks every tool in the collection.

Will I lose image resolution when converting from RW2 to JPG?

The JPG has the same pixel dimensions as the largest preview stored in the RW2 file. How large that preview is depends on your camera model, and it may be smaller than the full sensor resolution, so check the dimensions of the result if you need full size. The preview is also re-saved at the quality you choose, 90 by default, so set the slider to 100 for the least compression. Camera settings stored in the RW2, such as shutter speed and ISO, are not copied into the new JPG.

Does this tool support RW2 files from all Panasonic Lumix camera models?

The tool does not rely on a list of camera models. It reads any file ending in .rw2 and looks inside it for an embedded JPEG preview that a web browser can decode, then uses the largest one it finds. If a file contains no such preview, or is damaged, its status in the list changes to Failed and nothing is downloaded. In that case, open the file in your raw editor or Panasonic's own software and export a JPG from there.
