Frequently asked questions

What does the Batch Photo Compressor do?

It reduces the file size of many photos at once by re-encoding each one as a JPG at the quality you choose. Pixel dimensions stay exactly the same, so nothing is cropped or resized. Lower quality settings remove more fine detail the eye rarely notices, which makes files much smaller. Each compressed photo downloads with compressed_ added to the start of its original file name.

How do I compress multiple photos at once?

Drop your photos on the upload area or click it to choose them. Each file is listed with its current size and a Ready status, and the settings appear. Set the Compression Quality slider, then click Compress All Images. Files change to Compressing and then Done as each JPG downloads automatically. Use Clear to empty the list and load a new set.

What compression quality should I choose?

The slider runs from 1 to 100 percent and starts at 80, a good balance for web galleries and email. For portfolio images and client proofs, 85 to 90 keeps fine texture in skin, fabric and foliage. For quick previews and messaging, 60 to 70 is usually acceptable. Below 50, skies and smooth gradients start to show blocky artifacts, so check a few results before sending a full batch.

What happens to PNG files I compress?

PNG files are converted to JPG during compression, because JPG is what makes the size reduction possible. For photographs saved as PNG this can cut file size dramatically. JPG has no transparency, though, so logos, graphics and cutouts with transparent backgrounds will lose their transparent areas. Keep those as PNG and use this tool for regular photographs only.

Should I compress or resize photos for the web?

Often both. Compression lowers file size while keeping full resolution, which suits client downloads and prints at moderate sizes. For websites and email, images rarely need full camera resolution, so resizing to around 2000 pixels on the long edge first and then compressing gives far smaller files. The Batch Image Resizer handles the first step, and this compressor handles the second.

Is the Batch Photo Compressor free, and are my photos uploaded?

It is free, with no watermark and nothing to install, and your photos are not uploaded. Compression happens in your browser on your own device. To get access, confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account once, which unlocks every tool in the collection. Your original files are never changed, only new compressed copies are saved.
