Batch Geotag Tool

The Batch Geotag Tool writes one GPS location into the EXIF metadata of many JPEG photos at once. Photographers enter a latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, and every file gets matching GPS tags without the image being re-encoded, so a whole shoot shows up in the right place in photo catalogs, map views and stock libraries.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Batch Geotag Tool do?

It writes a GPS position into the EXIF metadata of each JPEG you select: the latitude and longitude, their north, south, east or west references, and the GPS version tag. The image data itself is not touched, so quality stays exactly the same, and the rest of the file's EXIF, such as camera settings and capture time, is kept. If a photo already had a GPS position, the new coordinates replace it. Every file in the batch receives the same location.

How do I geotag a batch of photos?

Click the file area and select your JPEG photos. They appear in a list marked Pending. Type the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, for example 48.8566 and 2.3522 for central Paris, then click Apply Geotags. Each file changes to Processed and a tagged copy downloads, named with geotagged_ in front of the original file name. If the coordinates are missing or out of range, the tool asks you to enter valid ones before it starts.

What coordinate format should I use?

Enter decimal degrees, the format most map apps show when you select a point, such as 40.7128 and -74.0060. Latitudes run from -90 to 90 and longitudes from -180 to 180; negative latitudes are south of the equator and negative longitudes are west of Greenwich. The tool converts your numbers into the degrees, minutes and seconds format that EXIF uses, storing seconds to four decimal places, which is far more precise than any camera GPS.

Can I give each photo a different location or use a GPS track?

No. Each run applies one location to every selected photo, which suits a shoot that happened in one place, such as a wedding venue, a studio or a viewpoint. For a trip with several locations, group the photos by place and run the tool once per group with that place's coordinates. The tool does not read GPX track files, match photos to a route by time, or write altitude, so use dedicated mapping software for those jobs.

Which files can I geotag, and who can see the location?

Only JPEG files, with a .jpg or .jpeg extension, because the tags are written into the JPEG's own EXIF block; any other file is marked JPEG only. HEIC and RAW files need geotagging in your camera, phone or editor. Remember that anyone who receives a geotagged file can read the location. That helps with catalogs and stock submissions, but for client homes or private locations, strip GPS data before sharing publicly, for example with the Batch EXIF Editor on this site.

Is the Batch Geotag Tool free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. The coordinates are written by your browser on your own device, so your photos and their locations never leave it. The first time, you confirm you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks this tool and every other one on the site.
