WebP Compressor

WebP Compressor re-encodes your images at the quality you choose to make smaller files for websites and galleries. Photographers can add JPG, PNG or WebP images, keep WebP output or switch to JPG or PNG, and set quality from 1 to 100. Each file keeps its pixel size and downloads separately, processed entirely in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WebP Compressor and how does it help photographers?

It is a free browser tool that makes image files smaller by re-encoding them at a quality level you choose. Lighter files make portfolio pages and client galleries load faster, which visitors notice, especially on phones. You add one or more images, choose WebP, JPG or PNG output, set the quality, and download the results. The pixel dimensions stay the same, so the saving comes from compression rather than resizing.

How do I use the WebP Compressor to optimize my images?

Drop images onto the upload area or click to choose them; JPG, PNG and WebP all work. Output Format is WebP by default, or pick JPG or PNG. Set Quality from 1 to 100; it starts at 90. Click Convert Images and each file is processed in turn and downloaded with converted_ in front of its name. Use a browser that can write WebP, such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox; Safari saves PNG data instead.

Why should I compress WebP files if the format is already optimized?

WebP is efficient, but a file is only as small as the quality it was saved at. Images exported at maximum quality, or straight from a camera or editor, often carry more data than a web page needs, and re-encoding them at a lower quality can shrink them noticeably with little visible change. The reverse is also true: re-encoding an already well-compressed WebP at a higher quality can make it larger, so compare file sizes before replacing anything.

How does this tool compare to standard JPEG compression?

Both are lossy and controlled by a quality setting. At a similar visual quality, WebP files are typically smaller than JPEGs, and WebP can keep transparency, which JPEG cannot. The tool can write either format, so you can compare: convert the same image to WebP and to JPG at the same quality and check the sizes and the look. JPG output is placed on a white background, since JPEG has no transparency.

What should I do if the compressed WebP file loses too much quality?

Raise the Quality slider and convert again. Settings around 75 to 90 suit most web photos; very low values cause blur, blockiness and color smudging, especially in skies and skin. Always compress from your original or highest-quality export, not from a file that has already been compressed, because each lossy re-encode adds its own loss. If an image must stay pixel-perfect, choose PNG, which is lossless but larger.

When is the best time in my workflow to use this tool?

Use it at the very end, after editing and resizing, just before uploading images to your website, blog or gallery. Resize to the dimensions the page actually displays first, since this tool keeps the pixel size and large dimensions are the main cause of heavy files. Keep your full-quality masters separately and compress copies, so you can always export again at a different size or quality.

Is there a limit to the file size or number of images I can compress?

There is no fixed limit on file size or count, and nothing is uploaded: every image is processed in your own browser. The practical limits are your device's memory and the largest image your browser can draw, which are generous on a modern computer. Large batches simply take longer, and your browser may ask once for permission to download multiple files.

Are my photographs kept secure and private during the compression process?

Yes. Compression happens entirely in your web browser on your own device. Your images are read, re-encoded and saved straight to your downloads folder without ever leaving your computer. That keeps client work and unpublished images private. Your original files are only read, never changed, and closing the tab clears everything the page loaded.

Does the compression process strip EXIF data and metadata from my photos?

Yes. The tool redraws each image and encodes a new file, so the output contains only the picture. Camera settings, capture dates, GPS location, copyright notices and embedded color profiles are not carried over. Removing location data can be useful for privacy on public websites. If you want copyright information in your web images, add it in your editing software when exporting, and keep your originals with their full metadata.

Can I compress JPEG or PNG files with the WebP Compressor?

Yes. The tool accepts any image your browser can open, including JPG, PNG and WebP. With the default WebP output, a JPG or PNG is converted to WebP at the quality you set, which is often the biggest saving. You can also choose JPG output to recompress a JPEG, or PNG output for lossless files. Transparent areas are kept in WebP and PNG output and filled with white in JPG output.
