The Imagen Team

Table of contents

The best Lightroom alternative depends on what you want Lightroom to stop doing for you. Some photographers want better color or tethering, some want to stop paying a subscription, and some just want the editing of a 600-photo wedding to take less of their week. Here are the picks, the comparison, and what changed in Lightroom itself this year.

The short list

  • Best for color and tethered studio work: Capture One
  • Best for noise and lens corrections: DxO PhotoLab
  • Best for quick creative AI edits, bought once: Luminar
  • Best all-in-one app on a one-time purchase: ON1 Photo RAW
  • Best free layered editor: Affinity
  • Best free, open-source raw editor: darktable
  • Best for editing whole shoots in your style, with Lightroom Classic or without it: Imagen

Facts and prices are from each company’s own pages, checked on November 2, 2026. Prices change with promotions, so check the vendor’s page before you buy.

New in 2026: Lightroom’s own AI

Before you leave, it’s worth knowing what Lightroom does now.

  • Assisted Culling arrived in Lightroom desktop and Lightroom Classic 15.0 in October 2025. It picks photos by subject sharpness, eye sharpness and open eyes, flags misfires and exposure problems, and lets you override every call.
  • Prompt to Edit arrived in Lightroom desktop 9.6 on September 29, 2026, in early access. You describe a change, and generative AI redraws the photo as a new AI-generated DNG. It isn’t in Lightroom Classic, and each try uses generative credits: 20 at 2K and 30 at 4K. Read Lightroom Prompt to Edit, explained for our test, and Adobe generative credits, explained for what that adds up to. For Prompt to Edit and Imagen side by side, see Lightroom Prompt to Edit vs Imagen.

So Lightroom now covers a first cull and a few generative fixes. What it still leaves to you is editing every photo of a shoot in your style.

The alternatives

Capture One

Capture One is the studio photographer’s Lightroom alternative: its own raw engine, a detailed color editor and tethered shooting, on Mac and Windows, with an app for iPad and iPhone. It sells subscriptions (Pro, All in One, Studio) and a one-time Pro license. It can import a Lightroom catalog, carrying over ratings, keywords and basic adjustments. Choose it if your work is commercial, product or fashion, shot tethered.

DxO PhotoLab

DxO PhotoLab, now at version 10, is the specialist for image quality. Its DeepPRIME noise reduction and lab-measured lens corrections rescue high-ISO and wide-angle shots, and AI masks select people and areas in a click. It’s sold as a perpetual license on Windows and macOS. Its library is basic, so it suits landscape, wildlife and architecture photographers more than high-volume event work.

Luminar

Luminar (Luminar Neo) from Skylum is built around AI: Enhance AI, generative erase and an AI Assistant that takes written edit requests. It runs on Mac and Windows, on its own or as a plugin inside Lightroom Classic and Photoshop (the generative tools and the AI Assistant aren’t available in plugin mode). Licenses are one-time purchases, with the AI tools renewing after a year. It has no culling. Choose it for punchy creative edits on single photos.

ON1 Photo RAW

ON1 Photo RAW puts a browser, raw editor, layers and effects in one app for Mac and Windows, with NoNoise AI and AI masking. It’s a one-time purchase or a yearly MAX subscription. The MAX edition adds plugin use inside Lightroom and Photoshop, and version 2027, out November 2, adds an AI Culling Assistant to MAX. Choose it if you want everything in one place without a subscription.

Affinity

Affinity, now from Canva, is free for individuals with a Canva account, on Mac, Windows and iPad. It’s a layered editor with raw development, improved in version 3.3 (September 2026), and its AI tools need a Canva premium plan. It has no Lightroom-style photo library, so it suits retouching and compositing more than managing big shoots.

darktable

darktable is a free, open-source raw editor and photo manager under the GPL, for Windows, macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux; the current release is 5.6.2. It’s deep and precise, with parametric and drawn masks, but expects you to learn its way of working. It’s the pick for Linux users and anyone who wants full control at no cost.

Imagen

Imagen isn’t a Lightroom replacement for everything. It’s an alternative to editing a whole shoot by hand. Your Personal AI Profile learns your style from your own edited photos and applies it to every photo in a new shoot, and AI culling groups duplicates and flags blurry shots and closed eyes, with the final calls yours.

There are two ways to work with it:

  • With Lightroom Classic. Imagen is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, and your edits go back into your catalog, so you finish where you always have.
  • In Imagen Studio, on its own. Studio takes a shoot from raw files to finished photos in one project: cull, edit, review and export. Its assistant lets you adjust the edits in plain words across the set. It moves the sliders you’d move by hand and keeps your original pixels: it never adds or removes a pixel, and it doesn’t use credits (a daily limit applies). Studio is rolling out to everyone from November 9.

You pay per edited photo (Pay-as-you-go) or a flat fee for unlimited edits with culling included (Limitless); see Imagen’s plans. You can start with 1,000 photos on the free trial, no credit card required.

Leaving Lightroom, or keeping it?

You don’t have to choose all at once. Many working photographers keep Lightroom Classic as their library and for local fixes, and hand the slow part, culling and editing whole shoots, to a tool built for it. Others move to one app entirely. Decide which job you want to get rid of, and pick for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Lightroom?

It depends on the job you want to hand over. Capture One for color and tethered studio work, DxO PhotoLab for noise and lens corrections, ON1 Photo RAW for an all-in-one app on a one-time purchase, darktable for a free, open-source raw editor, and Imagen for editing whole shoots in your own style, with Lightroom Classic or without it.

Is there a free alternative to Lightroom?

Yes. darktable is free and open source, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Affinity is free for individuals with a Canva account and develops raw files, though its AI tools need a Canva premium plan. See our guide to free Lightroom alternatives for more.

Can I move my Lightroom catalog to another editor?

Partly. Capture One can import a Lightroom catalog with its ratings, keywords and basic adjustments, but no app reads every Lightroom edit. Imagen sidesteps the question: it works inside your Lightroom Classic workflow, so the catalog stays where it is.

Does Lightroom have AI culling now?

Yes. Assisted Culling arrived in Lightroom desktop and Lightroom Classic 15.0 in October 2025. It picks photos by sharpness and open eyes and flags misfires, and you make the final calls.

Is Imagen a Lightroom alternative?

For editing whole shoots, yes; for everything Lightroom does, no. Imagen culls and edits a full shoot in your style, and you can finish in Lightroom Classic or deliver from Imagen Studio. For local fixes, presets and Adobe’s generative tools, Lightroom stays the place to go.
