Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram Reels cover?
Reels play in a 9:16 vertical frame, and 1080 x 1920 pixels is the standard full-resolution size for a cover image. This tool outputs exactly that size. Your profile grid shows a tighter crop of the same cover, so keep the subject near the middle of the frame. Because this version trims evenly from the center, a centered subject stays visible both in the full-screen view and on the grid.
How do I make a Reels cover with this tool?
Click the upload area labeled Click or Drop Image to Resize and choose one photo. Its file name appears in the list with a Selected status. Press Process for Reels and the tool scales the image until it fills the 1080 x 1920 frame, crops whatever extends past the edges equally on both sides, and downloads a JPG named Reels_Cover_ followed by your original file name.
Will my photo be stretched or get black bars?
Neither. The image keeps its original proportions and is scaled until it covers the whole vertical frame, and anything outside 1080 x 1920 is trimmed away. A horizontal photo therefore loses its left and right sides, while a photo already shot at 9:16 fits with no cropping at all. If you want to choose exactly what stays in frame, crop to 9:16 in your editor first.
Which file formats can I use, and what do I get back?
Any image your browser can open works, which usually means JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, plus AVIF in current browsers. The tool handles one image at a time and always saves a JPG at 95 percent quality, which keeps fine detail and smooth gradients intact. If a file refuses to load, export it as a JPG or PNG from your editing software and select it again.
What makes a good Reels cover for a photography account?
Choose a frame with one clear subject, strong contrast and some breathing room, because covers are seen small in feeds and on your grid. Many photographers use a finished still from the shoot rather than a grab from the video, since a full-resolution photo looks noticeably sharper. Keeping covers consistent in color and tone across your Reels makes the grid read like a curated portfolio.
Is the Reels cover resizer free, and are my photos private?
Yes, it is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. Resizing happens inside your browser, so your photos stay on your own device and are never uploaded anywhere. The first time you use it, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which then unlocks every tool in the collection.
