What does the Resize for Instagram Square tool do?
It places your photo inside a 1080 by 1080 pixel square. The image is scaled to fit entirely within the frame, centered, and the remaining space is filled with white, so nothing is cropped. The result is saved as a JPG at 90 percent quality, with instagram_square_ added to the start of the original file name.
How do I make a photo square for Instagram?
Click the area labeled Click or Drop Image to Square and choose a photo. The file appears in the list with a Ready status. Click Process & Download, and the square JPG is created and saved to your downloads folder. Repeat the steps for each photo you want to post in the square format.
Will my photo be cropped to fit the square?
No. The whole image is kept. A horizontal photo gets white bars above and below, and a vertical photo gets white bars on the left and right. If you prefer a full-bleed square with no borders, crop your image to 1:1 in your editor first, and the tool will resize it to exactly 1080 by 1080 pixels.
Why use white borders instead of cropping?
Cropping a wide landscape or a tall portrait to a square often removes the very elements that make the photo work. White borders keep the full composition while still fitting the square grid, and they give a clean, gallery-style look when used consistently across your feed. Many photographers use the style to present complete frames.
Is 1080 x 1080 pixels the right size for Instagram?
1080 pixels wide is the standard width Instagram displays, so a 1080 by 1080 square shows at full quality without the app upscaling it. Starting from a larger original and letting the tool scale it down keeps edges sharp. Smaller originals are enlarged to fit, which can look soft, so export your photos at full size first.
