Frequently asked questions
What is an FFF file?
FFF is one of Hasselblad's raw image formats. Like other raw files, it holds sensor data and metadata rather than a finished picture, so most browsers, phones and everyday image viewers cannot open it. Converting to PNG gives you an image that anyone can view, from a client on a phone to a retoucher on any operating system.
How do I convert FFF files to PNG?
Click the upload area and choose your FFF files. Each file is listed as Ready and the Convert to PNG button becomes active. Click it and the tool works through the list, showing Converting and then Done for each file as its PNG downloads. If a file has no preview the browser can read, its status says so instead. If your browser asks whether the page may download multiple files, allow it.
Can I convert a whole folder of FFF files?
You can select many FFF files at once, and they are converted one after another in the same session. Each PNG keeps the original file name with a .png extension, so matching outputs to raw files stays simple. Because medium format images are large, converting in groups of a few dozen keeps your browser responsive.
Is the PNG output lossless?
PNG uses lossless compression, so saving adds no new compression artifacts. The image itself comes from the JPEG preview stored inside the FFF file, so any compression in that preview is already part of the picture, and the PNG keeps it exactly as decoded. It is an 8-bit rendered image, so the extended latitude of the raw data is not kept. Use the PNG for viewing, proofs and handoffs, and keep the FFF for serious editing.
Should I convert FFF to PNG or to TIFF?
Choose PNG when you want lossless quality with smaller files than uncompressed TIFF, for example for web proofs, contact sheets or sharing with a retoucher. Choose TIFF when a print lab, publisher or archive specifically asks for it. Either way, keep your original FFF files as the master copies for any future edits.
Is the FFF to PNG converter free?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs nothing installed. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device and never uploaded. Access takes one quick step the first time: you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and every tool is unlocked.
