What does the Cloud Storage Cost Calculator do?
It estimates how much space your photo library takes up and what that costs to store online each month. You enter the number of photos, the average size per photo in megabytes and the cost per gigabyte charged by your storage plan. The calculator shows Total Storage Needed in gigabytes and an Estimated Monthly Cost, both updating as you type.
How do I use the calculator?
Enter your library size in Number of Photos, then the typical file size in Average Size per Photo (MB), and your plan's monthly rate in Cost per GB ($). The results update instantly as you change any field, and you can also click Calculate Now. Storage equals photos multiplied by average size, divided by 1024. Monthly cost equals that storage multiplied by your rate.
How do I find my average photo size?
Check the total size of a typical shoot folder and divide it by the number of files in it. RAW files from high-resolution cameras are often several times larger than JPGs, so calculate RAW and JPG libraries separately if you keep both. Edited TIFF or layered files can be larger still. Using a real folder gives a far more accurate estimate than a guess.
Does the estimate include backups and other fees?
It covers storage only, for one copy of the library. If you follow a backup plan with more than one cloud copy, multiply the result by the number of copies. Some providers also charge for downloading data, for requests or for minimum storage periods, which are not included. Check your provider's pricing page for those before committing to a plan.
How can photographers keep storage costs down?
Cull before you archive. Removing duplicates, missed focus and near-identical frames from each shoot can shrink a library substantially, and AI culling software such as Imagen speeds that up. You can also keep RAW files only for delivered images, move older shoots to a cheaper archive tier, and rerun this calculator yearly to see how your library is growing.
