Frequently asked questions
What does the Studio Rental Cost Calculator work out?
It calculates the total cost of renting a photo studio. It multiplies the hourly rate by the number of hours, adds any equipment rental fee, and then applies your tax rate to that subtotal. The result appears as Total Cost in dollars, rounded to the cent, so you have one clear number to budget with or pass on to a client.
How do I calculate my studio rental cost?
Enter the studio's price per hour in Hourly Rate ($), the length of the booking in Duration (Hours), any lighting or gear fees in Equipment Rental Fee ($), and the applicable Tax Rate (%). Leave fields at zero if they do not apply. Click Calculate Total and the figure appears next to Total Cost. Change any input and click again to compare options.
Is tax applied to the equipment fee too?
Yes. The tool adds the hourly charges and the equipment fee together first, then applies the tax rate to that combined subtotal. If your studio taxes only part of the booking, or charges equipment as a flat fee outside tax, calculate the taxable portion separately and add the rest yourself. Decimal values such as 1.5 hours or an 8.25 percent rate are accepted.
How much studio time should I book?
Add time for setup, lighting changes, and breakdown, not just shooting. A simple headshot session might need an hour of shooting plus half an hour each side, while product or fashion shoots with several setups often run much longer. Overtime is usually charged at the hourly rate or more, so enter a realistic duration rather than the minimum.
How do I pass studio costs on to clients?
Calculate the full rental cost here, then decide whether to list it as a separate line item or build it into your session fee. Many photographers add a small margin to cover booking time and the risk of overruns. Keeping studio costs visible in your quote helps clients understand pricing, and makes it easy to adjust if they want a longer session.
Is the Studio Rental Cost Calculator free?
It is free and runs in your browser, so the figures you enter stay on your device and are not sent to a server. There is nothing to install. The first time, you answer that you are a photographer and sign in to or create a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool on the site.
